  1. 21. Human papillomaviruses : role in cervical dysplasia and carcinoma, and use as molecular risk marker for progression

    Author : Mina Kalantari; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Human papillomavirus; high risk; HPV; PCR; typing; cervical carcinoma; CIN; integration; disruption; deletion; El; E2; survival; inverse PCR; episomal DNA; FISH; chromosomal location;

    Abstract : The general aim of these studies was to define the role of infection with oncogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV) for development of cervical dysplasia and to obtain early molecular markers for progression to carcinoma. The results of cytological screening of 500 women in the Stockholm Gynaecologic Health Control were compared with HPV detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in situ hybridisation (ISH). 2. 22. Human papillomavirus and cervical cancer : detection of potential markers of disease progression using liquid-based cytology

    Author : Ingrid Norman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This protect aims to evaluate alternative strategies to screen for cervical cancer including liquid-based cytology (LBC) with supplementary reflex testing for human papillomavirus (HPV), p16INK4a, HPV-L1 capsid protein, and miR-205 for use as possible diagnostic and prognostic markers in women with abnormal findings detected through the organized cervical cancer screening program. This split-sample study enrolled 137 women with atypical Pap smear findings to compare the effectiveness of conventional cytology (CC) with LBC cytology for cervical cancer screening. READ MORE

  3. 23. Dynamics of oncogenic human papillomavirus infection

    Author : Veronika af Geijersstam; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : antibody; cervical cancer; epidemiology; papillomavirus; tumor virology;

    Abstract : Background: Sexually transmitted oncogenic human papillomaviruses(HPVs), particularly HPV type 16, are the major cause of several human cancers, notably cervical and other anogenital cancers. The spread of these infections in human populations can be monitored using seroepidemiology. READ MORE

  4. 24. Centrosome aberrations and tumor development

    Author : Kaoru Fujioka; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Centrosome; cervical carcinoma; adrenocortical tumor; tetraploidization; p53; griseofulvin; 13-cis-retinoic acid.;

    Abstract : The transformation of a normal cell to a tumor cell is a result of a failure somewhere in a complicated system of coordination, checkpoints and control mechanisms of inhibitors and activators working as triggers and transactivators of genes of importance for cell cycle progression. In the present thesis, the focus is on an important function that controls the segregation of the chromosomes during cell division to the next generation of two daughter cells. READ MORE

  5. 25. Immunogenetic markers in immune mediated diseases

    Author : Liene Nikitina-Zake; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HLA; MICA; TNFA; TNFa; KIR; CIN; cervical cancer; juvenile arthritis; MCTD; type I diabetes mellitus;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study HLA class II markers, as well as other - MHC and non MHC genes in different immune - mediated diseases, namely, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), cervical cancer, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and type I diabetes mellitus (T1 DM). HLA class II genes are located on the short arm of chromosome 6 and are known to be important for pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases due to the function of the molecules these genes encode.
