    Abstract : The aim of the studies was to explore fetal circulatory changes relative to development of brain-sparing flow (BSF) in growth-restricted fetuses exposed to acute hypoxic stress, as provoked by uterine contractions during an oxytocin challenge test (OCT).(1) In fetuses with a normal cerebral circulation during basal conditions, signs of an acute hyperperfusion in both the arterial and venous cerebral vascular systems were demonstrated in response to acute hypoxic stress; (2) Fetuses with an already established BSF showed no further ability of brain-sparing during acute hypoxic stress; (3) In venous cerebral vessels of fetuses with established BSF, the flow responses to hypoxic stress were equivocal, indicating different reactions in areas drained by different veins, or a deranged physiological vascular response; (4) Blood flow changes occurred synchronized in the middle and anterior cerebral arteries when fetuses with an intact cerebral circulation were exposed to hypoxic stress; (5) When fetuses with an established BSF showed no further changes in the middle cerebral artery, no changes were found in the anterior cerebral artery either. 2. 17. Moderately preterm infants : studies on length of hospital stay and neonatal outcome

    Author : Maria Altman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objective: Moderately preterm infants account for a large proportion of admissions and bed-days in neonatal units. Determinants of length of hospital stay, contemporary measures of morbidity by gestational week and risk factors predicting neonatal morbidity have been poorly studied. READ MORE

  3. 18. Interventions during pregnancy and labor and obstetric outcome

    Author : Malin Thorsell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objectives: The overall objective with the present thesis was to assess pregnancy and delivery associated risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Specific aims were : 1) to analyze the association between fetal size at the time of dating ultrasound and the risk of preterm delivery, small for gestational age birth (SGA), and macrosomia and to evaluate if the timing of ultrasound, i. 4. 19. Progesterone in human parturition : progesterone and 5α-pregnane-3,20-dione in relation to human myometrial activity

    Author : Mats Löfgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship of progesterone and 5α-pregnane-3,20-dione (5αDHP), a major progesterone metabolite, to human parturition. The serum concentrations of 5αDHP prior to, during and following parturition were to be established, as well as its maternal and fetal concentration in different modes of delivery. READ MORE

  5. 20. Inflammatory bowel disease : risk factors for adverse outcomes, and preventive measures

    Author : Dan Kornfeld; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to identify risk factors for malignant transformation, survival, pregnancy outcomes and complications Further to assess the impact of surveillance colonoscopy and pharmacotherapy as a preventive measures in patients inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). As sources of information we have utilized following population based cohorts3112 patients with ulcerative colitis diagnosis within the Uppsala Health Care Region from 1965 to 1983, 125 patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis collected from7 different hospitals in central of Sweden from 1964 to 1991, 239773 single births in Sweden from 1991 to 1992 and 4664 patients with ulcerative colitis diagnosis within the Uppsala Health Care Region and Stockholm County between year 1955 to 1984.
