  1. 16. Environmental and health hazards of chemicals in plastic polymers and products

    Author : Delilah Lithner; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : plastics; plastic products; plastic polymers; consumer products; environmental hazards; environment; health hazards; human health; hazard ranking; hazard assessment; chemical ranking; hazard identification; hazard classifications; hazardous chemicals; hazardous substances; toxic substances; monomers; polymers; toxicity; acute toxicity; toxicity tests; Daphnia magna; Toxicity Identification Evaluation; TIE; leaching; leachates; product leachates; leaching tests; plastic materials; plastic;

    Abstract : Plastics are extremely diverse in terms of chemical composition, properties and possible applications, and are widely distributed in the society and the environment. In the last 15 years the global annual production has doubled, reaching 245 million tons in 2008. READ MORE

  2. 17. LIGNIN HYDROTHERMAL LIQUEFACTION IN SUBCRITICAL WATER TO PRODUCE BIOFUEL AND CHEMICALS

    Author : Tallal Belkheiri; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biomass valorisation; base depolymerisation; biofuel; lignin; green chemicals.;

    Abstract : Lignin is one of the most abundant amorphous macromolecules found in nature. Along with cellulose and hemicellulose, it forms a main component of biomass, and is mainly responsible for providing strength, rigidity and resistance to degradation. From a chemistry perspective, lignin is an important source of aromatics. READ MORE

  3. 18. In silico tools in risk assessment : of industrial chemicals in general and non-dioxin-like PCBs in particular

    Author : Mia Stenberg; Patrik Andersson; Miriam Jacobs; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemometrics; industrial chemicals; in silico tools; molecular descriptors; non-dioxin-like PCBs; partial least-squares PLS ; principal component analysis PCA ; quantitative structure-activity relationship QSAR ; REACH; risk assessment RA ; statistical molecular design; structure-activity relationship SAR ;

    Abstract : Industrial chemicals in European Union produced or imported in volumes above 1 tonne annually, necessitate a registration within REACH. A common problem, concerning these chemicals, is deficient information and lack of data for assessing the hazards posed to human health and the environment. READ MORE

  4. 19. Lignin Conversion to Value-Added Small-Molecule Chemicals : Towards Integrated Forest Biorefineries

    Author : Omar Y. Abdelaziz; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aromatic monomers; biorefinery; catalysis; kraft lignin; lignin depolymerization; lignin valorization; microbial conversion; renewable chemicals; techno-economic analysis;

    Abstract : Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on Earth and has significant potential as a feedstock for industrial use. Due to its intrinsic heterogeneity and recalcitrance, lignin has been regarded as a low-value side-product in the pulp and paper industry and in second-generation biorefineries. READ MORE

  5. 20. Inconsistencies and missing links in EU chemicals legislation

    Author : Diana Kättström; Marlene Ågerstrand; Steffen Foss Hansen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; REACH; Cosmetic Products Regulation; Biocidal Products Regulation; CLP; new hazard classes; PBT vPvB; EDC; PMT vPvM; endocrine disruptor; Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability; Environmental Sciences; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : The EU chemicals legislation consists of the Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and the Regulation on Classification, Labelling, and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP), complemented by over fifty regulations and directives regulating specific uses and products. While regulating individual uses may offer a faster and simpler approach to protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals, it can also lead to inconsistencies, such as gaps and overlaps.
