  1. 6. Linear models for multiscale materials simulations : Towards a seamless linking of electronic and atomistic models for complex metal oxides

    Author : Akshay Krishna Ammothum Kandy; Peter Broqvist; Jolla Kullgren; Eddie Wadbro; Ben Hourahine; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Force fields; Electronic structure calculations; CCS; DFTB; CCS Q; repulsive fitting; Kemi med inriktning mot materialkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Materials Chemistry;

    Abstract : Multiscale modelling approaches, connecting data from electronic structure calculations all the way towards engineering continuum models, have become an important ingredient in modern materials science. Materials modelling in a broader sense is already amply used to address complex chemical problems in academic science, but also in many industrial sectors. READ MORE

  2. 7. Surface modification of inorganic materials with graphene oxide : From solution to high-temperature synthesis

    Author : Simon Tidén; Ulf Jansson; Mamoun Taher; Erik Lewin; Lars Nyborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Graphene; Graphene oxide; Coatings; Additive Manufacturing; Laser Powder Bed Fusion; Reactive Hot Pressing; Kemi med inriktning mot materialkemi; Chemistry with specialization in Materials Chemistry;

    Abstract : The use of graphene as an additive in materials is often challenging due to the agglomeration of the two-dimensional graphene sheets. An alternative additive is graphene oxide (GO), an oxidized form of graphene, which is easily dispersed in water. READ MORE

  3. 8. Oxygen Vacancy Chemistry in Ceria

    Author : Jolla Kullgren; Kersti Hermansson; Shluger Alex; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ceria; Density Functional Theory; Oxygen storage; Nano crystals; Sulfur poisoning; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : Cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2), ceria, is an active metal oxide used in solid oxide fuel cells and for the purification of exhaust gases in vehicle emissions control. Behind these technically important applications of ceria lies one overriding feature, namely ceria's exceptional reduction-oxidation properties. READ MORE

  4. 9. Carbothermal synthesis of nano-structured metal, carbides and nitrides, using solution processed precursors; from precursor to product

    Author : Sarmad Naim Katea; Gunnar Westin; Hilmar Vidarsson; Sanjay Mathur; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Solution-based chemical processing; sol-gel; ceramic powders; transition metal carbides and nitrides; sintering; nickel binder; mechanical properties; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : This thesis describes how solution chemical based carbothermal syntheses can be used for the synthesis of nanostructured zirconium carbide and nitride nanophase powders as well as a nickel-metal coating on NbC for use as a sintering agent. The focus is on the development of novel synthesis routes using atomic or small nanoscale level mixing of the metal oxide and carbon source in the starting precursors, enabling the use of lower synthesis temperatures and non-agglomerated nanosized powders. 5. 10. Structural Studies of Mn-X (X=Al, Bi): Permanent Magnetic Materials without Rare Earth Metals

    Author : Hailiang Fang; Martin Häggblad Sahlberg; Peter Svedlindh; Samrand Shafeie; Linda Udby; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Synthesis; Magnetism; Diffraction.; Chemistry with specialization in Inorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot oorganisk kemi;

    Abstract : How to generate and use electricity in a more efficient way is a major challenge for humankind. In this context, permanent magnets play an important role within a very broad range of electric power applications. The strongest magnets used today are mainly based on alloys that contain rare-earth metals, which are neither economical nor sustainable. READ MORE
