  1. 1. Stress in chickens : Effects of domestication and early experience on behaviour and welfare

    Author : Maria Ericsson; Per Jensen; Linda Keeling; Bjarne Braastad; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The domestication is the process where animals have adapted to human conditions. A prerequisite for domestication is tame behaviour towards humans and subsequently, selection for other desirable traits took place which led to changes in several behavioural and physiological parameters. 2. 2. Intermittent fasting in chickens : Physiological mechanisms and welfare implications for broiler breeders

    Author : Caroline Lindholm; Jordi Altimiras; Ian Dunn; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Broiler breeder chickens are the parent stock used to produce broiler chickens raised for human consumption and have long been caught in a welfare dilemma. The immensely successful selection of fast-growing meat-type chickens over the last 80 years has created a remarkably efficient meat-producer and given us access to cheap chicken meat but has also created health problems for the animals. 3. 3. Domestication effects on foraging behaviour : consequences for adaptability in chickens

    Author : Christina Lindqvist; Per Jensen; Björn Forkman; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Etologi; chicken; domestication effects; behaviour; red jungle fowl RJF ; contrafreeloading CFL ; egg production; Ethnology; Etnologi;

    Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to study domestication effects on foraging behaviour in chickens and to investigate whether and how domestication and selection for high production have influenced adaptability in chickens. Two domestic strains of chickens (egg layers and meat type chickens) and their wild ancestor, the red jungle fowl (RJF) were compared in different test situations with respect to foraging behaviour and adaptability. 4. 4. The Physiology of Chicken Domestication : Involvement of the HPA-axis and the Autonomic Nervous System

    Author : Magnus Elfwing; Jordi Altimiras; Michael Axelsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Domestication; chickens; HPA-axis; autonomic nervous system; heart rate; allometry;

    Abstract : Domesticering är en urvalsprocess för önskvärda egenskaper hos djur som över tid förändrar deras utseende, beteende och genetik. Några exempel av djur som genomgått denna riktade avel är vargen, mufflon, uroxen, vildsvinet och den röda djungelhönan som vi idag känner som hunden, fåret, kon, grisen och slaktkycklingen. 5. 5. Genomic and Peptidomic Characterization of the Developing Avian Brain

    Keywords : Toxicology; Sex differentation; Sex determination; Sex chromosomes; Dosage Compensation; Genetic; Chickens; Coturnix; Gene Expression Profiling; Neuropeptides; Diencephalon; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Chicken and Japanese quail are commonly used models in developmental and sex specific neuroendocrine research. There is relatively little known about the mechanisms behind their sex specific brain development, especially regarding the impact of the sex chromosomes (male: ZZ, female ZW) in relation to gonadal hormones.
