    Abstract : Situated within research on language socialization and family language policy, this thesis explores how young children (2–4 years old) learn their heritage language in multilingual, transnational families, and how multilingualism becomes an integral part of family life. It draws on video-ethnographic fieldwork in three bi/multilingual families in Sweden with preschool-aged children where the mothers speak Russian and the parents aspire to raise children multilingually.     Abstract : Spontaneous speech and linguistic skills at age 6 1/2 years were studied in 284 children who required neonatal intensive cam (NIC) in 1980-1985 (cohort 1) and 40 healthy controls and in 230 NIC children born in 1986-1989 (cohort 2) and 71 neonatally healthy children born at term.Eight aspects of the children's spontaneous speech in a conversation were evaluated: Information, speech motor function, sound pattern, word finding, word selection, grammar, interaction and motivation, and ten linguistic skills were assessed according to a protocol including imitation tasks, comprehension tasks and auditory functions, phonemes and word fluency.     Abstract : This thesis addresses identification and intervention of language and communication problems in children. The issue of identification is addressed in study I by investigating communicative ability in 18-month-old children, and in study II by exploring the prevalence of language and communication problems in children with complex problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
