  1. 1. Age and Constraints on Language Learning : First Language Retention and Second Language Acquisition in International Adoptees

    Author : Gunnar Norrman; Emanuel Bylund Spångberg; Guillaume Thierry; Janet Werker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bilingualism; critical period; electroencephalography; event-related potentials; first language retention; international adoption; phonology; second language acquisition; Bilingualism; tvåspråkighet;

    Abstract : This thesis investigates the influence of age of acquisition on the long-term second language development of international adoptees. Because age of acquisition typically coincides with the onset of bilingualism, the study of maturational age effects in second language acquisition has been empirically and conceptually entangled with changes in language input and use. 2. 2. Design and use of mobile technology in distance language education : Matching learning practices with technologies-in-practice

    Author : Olga Viberg; Åke Grönlund; Mats Tegmark; Annika Andersson; Victor Kaptelinin; Högskolan Dalarna; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; online distance education; mobile learning; mobile-assisted language learning; information systems artefact; design science research; learning practices; structuration; self-regulation; technology-in-practice; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis; Komplexa system - mikrodataanalys; Informatik; Informations- och kommunikationsteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the adaptation of formal education to people’s technology- use patterns, theirtechnology-in-practice, where the ubiquitous use of mobile technologies is central. The research question is: How can language learning practices occuring in informal learning environments be effectively integrated with formal education through the use of mobile technology? The study investigates the technical, pedagogical, social and cultural challenges involved in a design science approach. Abstract : Over the past few decades, the rapid development of information communication technology, internationalization and globalization worldwide have required a shift in the focus of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) towards competence in intercultural communication in which the role of culture in the acquisition of CFL and in the pragmatic use of the language is emphasized and promoted. However, most of the current research in this academic area remains only on a theoretical level. READ MORE

  4. 4. MaltParser -- An Architecture for Inductive Labeled Dependency Parsing

    Author : Johan Hall; Joakim Nivre; Welf Löwe; Martin Volk; Växjö universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Dependency Parsing; Support Vector Machines; Machine Learning; Language technology; Språkteknologi; Computer and Information Sciences Computer Science; Data- och informationsvetenskap;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis presents a software architecture for inductive labeled dependency parsing of unrestricted natural language text, which achieves a strict modularization of parsing algorithm, feature model and learning method such that these parameters can be varied independently. The architecture is based on the theoretical framework of inductive dependency parsing by Nivre \citeyear{nivre06c} and has been realized in MaltParser, a system that supports several parsing algorithms and learning methods, for which complex feature models can be defined in a special description language. 5. 5. Building Knowledge Graphs : Processing Infrastructure and Named Entity Linking

    Author : Marcus Klang; Robotik och Semantiska System; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; natural language processing; machine learning; computational lingustics; named entity linking;

    Abstract : Things such as organizations, persons, or locations are ubiquitous in all texts circulating on the internet, particularly in the news, forum posts, and social media. Today, there is more written material than any single person can read through during a typical lifespan. READ MORE
