  1. 21. Recreating the microenvironment of the neurovascular unit

    Author : Isabelle Matthiesen; Anna Herland; Thomas E. Winkler; Stéphanie Descroix; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microphysiological systems; neurovascular unit; induced pluripotent stem cells; extracellular matrix; hydrogels; in vitro models; mikrofysiologiska system; neurovaskulära enheten; inducerade pluripotenta stamceller; extracellulära matrisen; hydrogeler; in vitro modeller; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : The neurovascular unit (NVU) comprises the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and its surrounding astrocytes, pericytes and neurons that are embedded in the extracellular matrix (ECM). As the main function of the BBB is to protect the brain from inlet of pathogens and toxins, the specialized endothelial cells that keep the barrier tight will also hinder the passage of pharmaceuticals. 2. 22. Characterization of WC-Co tools used for machining of Alloy 718 under the influence of high-pressure coolant supply

    Author : Philipp Hoier; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; erosion; surface-modifications; High-pressure coolant supply; Alloy 718; tool wear; vapor-barrier;

    Abstract : The use of high-pressure jets for supply of coolant to the cutting zone has the potential to significantly increase the productivity and process stability when machining difficult-to-cut materials such as Ni-based superalloys. Apart from better chip-breakability, the jets enable the coolant to reach closer to the cutting edge and hence enhance its capability to dissipate heat. READ MORE

  3. 23. Massively parallel analysis of cells and nucleic acids

    Author : Julia Sandberg; Joakim Lundeberg; Nader Pourmand; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Massively parallel sequencing; 454; Illumina; multiplex amplification; whole genome amplification; single cell; polyguanine; flow-cytometry;

    Abstract : Recent proceedings in biotechnology have enabled completely new avenues in life science research to be explored. By allowing increased parallelization an ever-increasing complexity of cell samples or experiments can be investigated in shorter time and at a lower cost. READ MORE

  4. 24. Restoring antitumor immunity with dendritic cell reprogramming strategies. Reprogramming cancer cells to antigen-presenting cells

    Author : Alexandra Gabriela Barros Ferreira; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell Reprogramming; Cancer cells; Tumor Antigen-presenting Cells; immunotherapy;

    Abstract : For the past two decades, immunotherapy revolutionized cancer treatment. However, responses vary significantly among eligible patients and some cancer types are not yet open to immunotherapy. Several mechanisms contribute to immunotherapy resistance, including loss of antigen presentation machinery and immunosuppression. READ MORE

  5. 25. Investigation of nanoparticle-cell interactions for development of next generation of biocompatible MRI contrast agents

    Author : Natalia Abrikossova; Kajsa Uvdal; Caroline Brommesson; Eva Särndahl; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Progress in synthesis technologies and advances in fundamental understanding of materials with low dimensionality has led to the birth of a new scientific field, nanoscience, and to strong expectations of multiple applications of nanomaterials. The physical properties of small particles are unique, bridging the gap between atoms and molecules, on one side, and bulk materials on the other side. READ MORE
