1. 1. Asymmetric aldol and alkylation reactions using pyrrolidine-based chiral auxiliaries 2. Syntheses of pine sawfly pheromone precursors and structurally related compounds
Abstract : This thesis describes the syntheses of the 1-propionylatedauxiliaries (S)-(− )-2-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)propan-2-ol and (S)-(− )-2-(1-methoxy-1-methylethyl)pyrrolidine andtheir use in asymmetric aldol and alkylation reactions. Thesynthesis of 1-propionylated (2S,4R) 2-{4-[(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy]pyrrolidin-2-yl}propan-2-olis also described. READ MORE

4. Lewis acid Mediated Aza-Diels-Alder Reactions and Asymmetric Alkylations of 2H-azirines
Abstract : This thesis describes the use of 2H-azirines, three-membered unsaturatednitrogen-containing heterocycles, as reactive intermediates ina number of Lewis acid promoted alkylations and Diels-Alderreactions providing synthetically useful aziridines. In order to carry out this investigation a new generalprocedure for the ring closure of vinyl azides, forming theresultant 3-substituted-2H-azirines, was developed applying low boiling solventsin closed reaction vessels at elevated temperatures. 5. Organic Azides : Functional Molecules and Materials
Abstract : The work presented in this thesis stems from the chemistry of the azido group, and more specifically from the unique reactivity of perfluorinated aromatic azides and how to use this reactivity to access new types of molecules to enable new applications in asymmetric synthesis and materials. In the first section of this thesis, a photoactivatable fluorescence probe is presented, where the non-luminescent azide was activated via a UV-light-promoted intramolecular N–H insertion reaction forming a fluorescence emitter.
