  1. 1. Antimicrobial materials from cellulose using environmentally friendly techniques

    Author : Anna Ottenhall; Monica Ek; Josefin Illergård; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibacterial; antifungal; cellulosic; mold; bacteria; biobased; bio-based; renewable; insulation; packaging; water treatment; water purification; paper filter; paper; membrane; Antibakteriell; fungicid; mögel; antimögel; pappersfilter; vattenrening; membran; papper; bakterier; cellulosa; förpackning; isolering; förnyelsebar; biobaserade; nya material; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The transition to a more biobased society introduces both new opportunities and new challenges as we replace nonrenewable materials with renewable alternatives. One important challenge will be to control microbial growth on materials, both to protect the materials from biological degradation and to prevent the spread of infections and toxins that can cause illness. 2. 2. Barrier Properties of greaseproof paper

    Author : Henrik Kjellgren; Gunnar Engström; Lennart Stolpe; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Greaseproof papers; Air permeance; Coatings; Chitosan; Oxygen Barrier properties; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik; Chemical engineering;

    Abstract : The barrier properties of greaseproof paper are achieved by extensive beating of the fibres. This treatment results in high costs for energy, both as beating energy and drying energy. A full-scale trial has been performed to investigate the role of the pulp with respect to energy demand and the barrier properties of the final papers. READ MORE

  3. 3. On the interactions in cellulose systems : surface forces and adsorption

    Author : Monika Österberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : cellulose; hemicellulose; xylan; lignin; surface forces; adsorption; polyelectrolyte; SFA; AFM; ESCA; Langmuir-Blodgett films; chitosan; steric forces; bridging; adhesion;

    Abstract : In this thesis the interactions in cellulose systems havebeen studied with emphasis on surface forces and adsorptionphenomenon. The study was limited to surfaces and polymers ofinterest for papermaking. READ MORE

  4. 4. Influence of paper properties and polymer coatings on barrier properties of greaseproof paper

    Author : Henrik Kjellgren; Gunnar Engström; Lars Järnström; Lennart Stolpe; Torbjörn Helle; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Greaseproof paper; Barrier properties; Gas barrier; Paper properties; Coatings; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : Greaseproof paper has a dense structure and therefore provides a natural barrier against materials like fat and oils. The barrier is obtained by extensive refining of the pulp. READ MORE

    Abstract : Paper packaging is commonly found in the form of paper and cardboard boxes, but recently paper packing is being used in food packaging, trays, beverage packaging and even paper straws, among others. Paper strength additives have been developed to increase the efficiency of the joint strength and the joint areas and potentially maintain bulk in paper products. READ MORE
