  1. 1. Hierarchical responses to organic contaminants in aquatic ecotoxicological bioassays: from microcystins to biodegradation

    Author : Katia Montenegro; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; grazing efficiency; potential trade-off; glyphosate mineralization; DDE; potential denitrification; microcystin production; potential nitrification; DDE biodegradation; water stable isotopes; groundwater apparent age; fenthion; Chlorophyta; Daphnia pulex; diversity productivity relationship; glyphosate;

    Abstract : In this thesis I explore the ecotoxicological responses of aquatic organisms at different hierarchical levels to organic contaminants by means of bioassays. The bioassays use novel endpoints or approaches to elucidate the effects of exposure to contaminants and attempt to give mechanistic explanations that could be used to interpret effects at higher hierarchical scales. 2. 2. Heavy metal contamination and toxicity : Studies of Macroalgae from the Tanzanian Coast

    Author : Florence Alex Mamboya; Mats Björk; Nils Ekelund; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heavy metals; Padina gymnospora; Ulva reticulata; salinity; nutrients; proteins; uptake; growth; Fv Fm; Zanzibar Channel; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : Concentrations of various metals are elevated above background levels in several intertidal areas along the Tanzanian coasts. However, there is little available information concerning the toxicity of these metals and how the uptake of these metals by bioindicators are influenced by external factors, such as heavy rains and increased coastal eutrophication, which tend to fluctuate. 3. 3. Calcareous Algae of a Tropical Lagoon : Primary Productivity, Calcification and Carbonate Production

    Author : Juma W. Kangwe; Mats Björk; Lena Kautsky; Ian Bryceson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : The green algae of the genus Halimeda Lamouroux (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales) and the encrusting loose-lying red coralline algae (Rhodophyta, Corallinales) known as rhodoliths are abundant and widespread in all oceans. They significantly contribute to primary productivity while alive and production of CaCO3 rich sediment materials on death and decay. READ MORE
