  1. 1. Detection of Lipids and Proteins on Biological Surfaces using Imaging Mass Spectrometry

    Author : Louise M Carlred; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ToF-SIMS; GM1; cholesterol; Amyloid-β; phospholipids; Imaging Mass Spectrometry; Alzheimer’s disease; sulfatides; QCM-D; MALDI;

    Abstract : Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) is a technique that can be used for imaging the spatial distribution of many different molecules at the same time. It is very sensitive for detection of small biomolecules, such as lipids, whereas larger biomolecules, such as peptides and proteins, cannot be detected as intact entities due to fragmentation. 2. 2. Sources of Arachidonic Acid in Platelets, Bone, Marrow and Gastrointestinal Tract

    Author : Li Zhou; Lund Medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phospholipids; Megakaryocyte; Lysophosphatidylcholine; Lipoproteins; Linoleic acid; Intralipid; Interconversion; Gastrointestinal tract; Plasma free fatty acids; Fasting; Dietary fatty acids; Desaturase; Cholesterol; Chylomicron remnant; Chylomicron; Arachidonic acid; Bone marrow; Platelets; Protein S; Prothrombin; Triglycerides.; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism;

    Abstract : This study investigates pathways by which the eicosanoid precursor pools in the platelets, bone marrow and the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa are acquired and regulated, and in this context some aspects on the interaction between triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins and platelets. 1. 3. 3. Quantitation, Purification and Reconstitution of the Red Blood Cell Glucose Transporter GLUT1

    Author : Shusheng Zuo; Bengt Mannervik; Bengt Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Cholesterol; Cytochalasin B; Glucose; GLUT1; Hummel and Dreyer analysis; Immobilization; PEG 5000 -DSPE; Biomembrane; Proteoliposome; Quantitative frontal affinity chromatography; Red blood cell streptavidin-biotin immobilization; Sulfhydryl affinity chromatography; The modified micro-Bradford CaPE assay; MALDI-ToF-MS; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : The human glucose transporter GLUT1 facilitates glucose to be accumulated on the other side of the cell membrane. The functional state of GLUT1 is uncertain due to diversity of the reports. In this thesis, the activity of red blood cell GLUT1 was extensively studied to further characterize this protein. 4. 4. Classical and Quantum Descriptions of Proteins, Lipids and Membranes

    Author : Richard Tjörnhammar; Olle Edholm; Sagar Pandit; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Quantum corrections; Coordination structure; Polarisation; Phase transitions; Kelvin differential equation; Line tension; Elastic membrane models; Molecular particle models; Zinc binding; Cholesterol and Phospholipids; Biological Physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : In this thesis the properties of proteins and membranes are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The subject is decomposed into parts addressing free energy calculations in proteins, mechanical inclusion models for lipid bilayers, phase transitions and structural correlations in lipid bilayers and atomistic lipid bilayer models. 5. 5. Molecular Dynamic Simulations of Biological Membranes

    Author : Qaiser Waheed; Olof Edholm; Friederike Schmid; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phospholipids; area compressibility; undulations; quantum corrections; cholesterol; phase transition; segregation;

    Abstract : Biological membranes mainly constituent lipid molecules along with some proteins and steroles. The properties of the pure lipid bilayers as well as in the presence of other constituents (in case of two or three component systems) are very important to be studied carefully to model these systems and compare them with the realistic systems.
