  1. 6. Phosphoinositides control insulin secretion through multiple routes

    Author : Phuoc My Nguyen; Christina Bark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phosphoinositides; PI 4 P; PI 4; 5 P2; Ca2 ; optogenetics; VDCC; Sac2; OSBP; OSW-1; cholesterol; membrane contact sites;

    Abstract : Glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells is the sequence of events that starts with glucose uptake and ends with the fusion of insulin granules with the plasma membrane through Ca2+-triggered exocytosis. Phosphoinositides are minor components of all cellular membranes, yet play fundamental roles as regulators of many cellular processes. READ MORE

  2. 7. Omics Techniques Applied to Diabetes Research - Focus on HSL-Null Mice and Clonal β-Cells

    Author : Celine Fernandez; Molekylär endokrinologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolomics; transcriptomics; treadmill; liver; HSL; cholesterol; proteomics;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by increased blood glucose levels. For overt type 2 diabetes to develop, both insulin action and insulin secretion must be perturbed. READ MORE

  3. 8. Hormonal Regulation of the Human CYP27A1 and CYP7B1 Genes

    Author : Wanjin Tang; Kjell Wikvall; Maria Norlin; Mats Gåfvels; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmaceutical biochemistry; CYP27A1; CYP7B1; cholesterol; estrogen; androgen; prostate; glucocorticoid receptor; fetal development; Farmaceutisk biokemi;

    Abstract : CYP27A1 and CYP7B1 are widely expressed in various human tissues and are two key enzymes involved in the pathways for conversion of cholesterol to bile acids. Also, CYP27A1 is involved in bioactivation of vitamin D3 and CYP7B1 plays a role in 7alpha-hydroxylation of dehydroepiandrosterone and other steroids. READ MORE

  4. 9. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder

    Author : Majd A. I. Mirza; Tobias Larsson; Tilman Drüeke; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; FGF23; FGF-23; CKD; CKD-MBD; cardiovascular disease; vascular function; atherosclerosis; hypertrophy; LVMI; LVH; fractures; bone; fat mass; obesity; apolipoproteins; cholesterol; lipids; Kidney diseases; Njursjukdomar; Cardiovascular medicine; Kardiovaskulär medicin; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 5. 10. Studies on cholesterol homeostasis by modulation of lipoproteins and bile acids

    Author : Lisa-Mari Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholesterol; lipoproteins; bile acids; cholestyramine; chenodeoxycholic acid; CYP7A1; HNF4alpha; PCSK9; hepatocytes; ethanol; atherosclerosis; ApoE; thyroid hormone receptor;

    Abstract : Excess plasma cholesterol, in particular high levels of LDL cholesterol, is a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The liver has a central role in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism: i) a major part of the cholesterol present in the body is synthesized in the liver; ii) the level of plasma lipoproteins is regulated by liver uptake and secretion of these particles and iii) the liver is essential for elimination of cholesterol from the body as such or by its conversion into bile acids.
