  1. 1. Studies of the Arctic Ocean sea ice cover and hydrothermal heat fluxes

    Author : Christian Stranne; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Oceanography; Arctic climate sensisitvity;

    Abstract : Since reliable ice extent estimates from satellite data became available in 1979 the Arctic sea ice cover has followed a declining long term trend. Over the last decade the decline has accelerated with record low sea ice extents recorded in 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2012. READ MORE

  2. 2. Spiritum sidus : The star of our life – On internal tides in the ocean

    Author : Gaspard Geoffroy; Jonas Nycander; Christian Stranne; Aurélien Ponte; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Internal waves; Tides; Argo floats; Time series analysis; Flow-topography interaction; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi;

    Abstract : Tidal currents flowing over rough bathymetry generate internal tides. These internal waves with tidal frequency can be decomposed into vertical modes. Low modes generally travel thousands of kilometers, until they break due to shear flow instabilities, while high modes are believed to break close to the generation site. READ MORE

  3. 3. Uncovering Ocean Mixing near Rough Bathymetry : Using Broadband Acoustics

    Author : Julia C. Muchowski; Christian Stranne; Martin Jakobsson; Lars Umlauf; Lars Arneborg; Fer Ilker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ocean mixing; diapycnal mixing; broadband acoustics; turbulence microstructure; rough bathymetry; stratified flow over obstacles; observations of turbulent mixing; Baltic Sea research; maringeologi; Marine Geology;

    Abstract : Ocean mixing related to rough bathymetry is highly dynamic and exhibits large spatial and temporal variability. Therefore, established in-situ methods as well as numerical models often lack the resolution to capture this type of mixing. In this thesis, acoustics are used to observe, map and quantify stratified mixing at unprecedented resolution. READ MORE
