  1. 6. Waterfowl herbivory on submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes

    Author : Håkan Sandsten; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; Hydrobiology; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; akvatisk ekologi; Djurekologi; Animal ecology; Anas; Fulica atra; Cygnus; alternative stable states; water depth; distribution; plant species composition; hydrophytes; propagule size; Herbivory; tuber; Potamogeton; marine biology; aquatic ecology;

    Abstract : Submerged macrophytes are thought to stabilize clear-water states of shallow lakes. The aim of this thesis was to elucidate how waterfowl herbivory can affect abundance, distribution and species composition of submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes. READ MORE

  2. 7. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton

    Author : Carina Pålsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; limnology; mixotrophy; phagotrophy; phytoplankton; oligotrophic; clear-water lakes; grazing; competition; nutrient enrichment; autotrophy; heterotrophy; bacterial ingestion; Hydrobiology; Marinbiologi; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. READ MORE

  3. 8. EstimatingChloride concentration in surface water and groundwater duet to deicing salt application

    Author : Eva-Lotta Thunqvist; KTH; []
    Keywords : road; deicing salt; monitoring; chloride; catchment area; river basin; simulation; GIS; groundwater; surface water;

    Abstract : A road in operation along with its traffic can pose aserious pollutant threat to groundwater and surface water inits vicinity. Examples of pollutants are metals from thecorrosion of vehicles, rails and poles and the wear of roadsurfaces and tyres; hydrocarbons from the wear of roadsurfaces, tyres, exhausts, oils; sodium chloride from roadsalt; and hazardous goods discharged in accidents. 4. 9. The palaeolimnological record of regime shifts in lakes in response to climate change

    Author : Linda Randsalu Wendrup; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; palaeolimnology; regime shifts; thresholds; alternative stable states; climate change; ecosystem dynamics; diatoms; hydrocarbons; monitoring; lake sediments; shallow lakes; 8.2 ka event;

    Abstract : Regime shifts in lake ecosystems can occur in response to both abrupt and continuous climate change, and the imprints they leave in palaeolimnological records allow us to investigate and better understand patterns and processes governing ecological changes on geological time scales. This thesis aims at investigating palaeolimnological records of regime shifts in lakes during the Holocene to explore how lake ecosystems responded to climate changes and anthropogenic activities and to identify thresholds or tipping points that produced regime shifts. 5. 10. Mercury and radiocesium in Swedish lakes

    Author : Tord Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Two large, nationwide monitoring data sets were compiled and statistically treated in order to create a national picture of the problems with high contents of mercury (Hg) and radiocesium (137Cs) in fish. Beside these two data sets, 75 lakes in four counties (Västernorrland, Gävleborg, Örebro and Kronoberg) were studied in connection to an evaluation of different measures to decrease the content of Hg and 137Cs in fish.
