  1. 11. Molecular mechanisms of transcriptional repression by the orphan receptor SHP

    Author : Ann Båvner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nuclear receptor; repression; small heterodimer partner; co-regulator;

    Abstract : SHP (Small Heterodimer Partner) is an atypical orphan member of the mammalian nuclear receptor family that consists of only a putative ligand-binding domain and thus cannot bind DNA. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the molecular mechanisms of the transcriptionally inhibitory effect of SHP. READ MORE

  2. 12. Transcriptional and epigenetic control of gene expression in embryo development

    Author : Ann Boija; Mattias Mannervik; Jerry L. Workman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Epigenetics; Cell specification; Drosophila embryo; Dorsal morphogen; CBP p300; Gene regulation; Chromatin; Promoter proximal Pol II pausing; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : During cell specification, temporal and spatially restricted gene expression programs are set up, forming different cell types and ultimately a multicellular organism. In this thesis, we have studied the molecular mechanisms by which sequence specific transcription factors and coactivators regulate RNA polymerase II (Pol II) transcription to establish specific gene expression programs and what epigenetic patterns that follows. 3. 13. The bioenergetic roles of PGC-1α1, kynurenines, and GPR35 in exercise and obesity

    Author : Shamim Dadvar; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Obesity is a major cause of medical comorbidity with detrimental effects on health span. Fundamentally, obesity is a condition of disrupted energy metabolism, where energy intake chronically exceeds expenditure. Over time, this disruption causes a systemic low-grade inflammation and impairs energy homeostasis. READ MORE

  4. 14. The role of Smad7 and TRAF6 in Prostate Cancer Cell Invasion, Migration and Survival

    Author : Maria Ekman; Marene Landström; Carl-Henrik Heldin; Jonas Fuxe; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TGF-beta; cell migration; invasion; apoptosis; Smad7; APC; ATM; TRAF6; p53; PC3U; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Transforming growth factor (TGF) β is a tumor suppressor during early tumor development, by inhibiting proliferation and inducing apoptosis. At later stages of cancer, it becomes a tumor promoter, and promotes tumor cell migration and invasion. TGFβ signals via its type II and type I receptors to several downstream signaling pathways. 5. 15. The importance of Foxi1 expression in kidney and inner ear

    Author : Sandra Rodrigo Blomqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Foxi1; intercalated cells; endolymphatic sac; acid base regulation;

    Abstract : The forkhead (FOX) genes comprise a family of transcription factors involved in generegulation in both embryonic and adult tissue. Foxi1 is expressed in the kidney andthe developing inner ear. We examined the significance of Foxi1 in these two organsand explain the molecular mechanisms behind the phenotype seen in Foxi1 deficientmice. READ MORE
