  1. 1. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system

    Author : Kristofer Wollein Waldetoft; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococci; virulence; coagulation; intrinsic pathway; evolution;

    Abstract : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. 2. 2. Regulation of Tissue Factor and Coagulation Activity : Translation Studies with Focus on Platelet-Monocyte Aggregates and Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

    Author : Christina Christersson; Agneta Siegbahn; Lars Wallentin; Jonas Oldgren; Ingebjorg Seljeflot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Internal medicine; Myocardial infarction; Coagulation; Platelet-monocyte aggregates; Tissue factor; Thrombin inhibition; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Myocardial infarction (MI) is often caused by a disruption of an atherosclerotic plaque with activation of coagulation, platelets and inflammation. The aims were; to investigate whether the oral direct thrombin inhibitor, ximelagatran affected markers for coagulation, platelet and inflammation in a patient cohort with recent MI and if the coagulation markers could identify patients with increased risk of new ischemic events; to evaluate some of the mechanisms involved in formation of platelet-monocyte aggregates (PMAs). 3. 3. Contact activation on bacterial surfaces - a virulence mechanism

    Author : Kristin Persson; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; General biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; sepsis; infection; S. aureus; S. typhimurium; E. coli; curli; fibrinopeptides; fibrinogen; Coagulation; contact system;

    Abstract : Life-threatening conditions from bacterial infections are a major clinical problem. During a severe infection, the host responds by a massive release of pro-inflammatory mediators together with a systemic activation of systems such as the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and complement systems. 4. 4. Protamine, Platelet Function and Coagulation in Cardiac Surgery

    Author : Mattias Törnudd; Sören Berg; John-Peder Escobar Kvitting; Sofia Ramström; Joakim Alfredsson; Ulf Schött; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiopulmonary bypass; Protamine; Platelet function; Coagulation;

    Abstract : Bleeding is a serious and common complication in cardiac surgery. Complicated surgery together with alterations in hemostatic conditions from the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), presents challenges in how to preserve hemostasis in the patient.   CPB is thought to affect platelet function and coagulation in many ways. 5. 5. The Plasma Contact System : New Functional Insights from a Hemostatic and Thrombotic Perspective

    Author : Jennie Bäck; Bo Nilsson; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Ulla Hedner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Contact activation; factor XII; platelets; coagulation; antithrombin; C1 inhibitor; hemostasis; biomarkers; vascular disease.; Klinisk immunologi; Clinical Immunology;

    Abstract : The physiological role of the plasma contact system still remains a partial enigma. The aim of the presented work was to expand our understanding of the plasma contact system, focusing on its physiological activation and function, principally from a hemostatic perspective. It also explored contact system activation under pathological conditions. READ MORE
