  1. 21. Removal of natural organic matter by enhanced coagulation in Nicaragua

    Author : Indiana García; Luis Moreno; Olle Wahlberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; drinking water; surrogate parameters; enhanced coagulation; natural organic matter; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi;

    Abstract : The existence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in a drinking water plant of Nicaragua has been investigated in order to see whether the concentration exceeded the maximum contaminant level recommended by the environmental protection agency of the United States (USEPA) and the Nicaragua guidelines. The influence of pH, temperature, chlorine dose and contact time on the formation of THMs were studied. READ MORE

  2. 22. Innate immune cell response in sepsis

    Author : Yongzhi Wang; Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; abdominal sepsis; neutrophil; monocyte; platelet; coagulation; lung;

    Abstract : Leukocyte recruitment is known to be a key feature at sites of inflammation and important in the combat against infectious agents. However, the mechanisms of leukocyte recruitment in the pulmonary microvasculature in response to local and systemic inflammation remain elusive. READ MORE

  3. 23. Circulating biomarkers in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm

    Author : Despina Flondell-Sité; Vaskulära sjukdomar - kliniska studier; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; matrix metalloproteinases; biomarkers; risk factors; fibrinolysis; coagulation; inflammation; Abdominal aortic aneurysm; statin; interleukin 6.; APC-PCI complex; serpine-1; endothelin-1;

    Abstract : Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) develops in 3-6% of the population over 65 years and affects mainly men. AAA has a complex etiology involving inflammation, proteolysis, fibrinolysis and coagulation. READ MORE

  4. 24. Leukocytes and Coronary Artery Disease : Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Author : Eva Lindmark; Peter Kierulf; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Tissue factor; monocytes; platelets; cytokines; endothelial cells; unstable coronary artery disease; coagulation; inflammation; biochemical markers; IL-6; risk stratification; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Clinical Chemistry; klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Tissue factor (TF) is the initiator of the coagulation cascade. Monocytes do not normally express TF, but can be induced to do so by certain stimuli. Aberrant TF expression is important in the thrombotic complications of bacterial sepsis, certain malignancies and coronary artery disease (CAD). READ MORE

  5. 25. Biomaterials and Hemocompatibility

    Author : Anna E. Engberg; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Peter Zipfel; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement; Coagulation; Whole blood; Biomaterials; Polymers and Hemocompatibility; Immunology; Immunologi; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Biomaterials are commonly used in the medical clinic today; however, artificial materials can activate the cascade systems in the blood (complement-, coagulation-, contact- and fibrinolytic systems) as well as the platelets to various degrees. When an artificial surface comes in contact with blood, plasma proteins will be adsorbed to the surface within seconds. READ MORE
