  1. 1. Flight Behaviour of Passerines on Nocturnal Migration

    Author : Cecilia Nilsson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bird migration; Passerines; Flight Behaviour; Tracking radar; Optimal migration; Flight speed; Airspeed; Wind drift; Nocturnal migration; Coastline effects; Flight directions; Reverse migration;

    Abstract : Many passerines migrate during the night and at high altitudes, making their migration difficult to observe. By using tracking radars we have been able to make exact observations of the flight behaviour of passerines on nocturnal migration, which has enabled us to test several hypotheses about adaptive values and constraints regarding migratory behaviour in different ecological contexts. 2. 2. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea

    Author : Nina Svensson; Erik Sahlée; Hans Bergström; Anna Rutgersson; Søren Larsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boundary layer; Baltic Sea; stable conditions; low-level jet; sea breeze; boundary layer rolls; mesoscale effects; WRF; LIDAR;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 3. 3. Grazing in Macroalgae Communities of the Baltic Sea

    Author : Roland Engkvist; Hans Kautsky; Högskolan i Kalmar; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus serratus are the only large, structuring perennial brown macroalgae in the low salinity waters of the Swedish coast of the Baltic Proper. Since the 1970s there are reports of declining Fucus vesiculosus stands from several locations around the Baltic Proper, but also indications of recoveries e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. Factors structuring Fucus communities at open and complex coastlines in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Martin Isaeus; Lena Kautsky; Johan Ehrlén; Stein Fredriksen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Botany;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with physical factors and biological interactions affecting the distribution of two fucoid species, Fucus vesiculosus and F. serratus, in the Baltic Sea. Studies have been carried out in two quite different environments: an archipelago, and an open rocky coast. READ MORE

  5. 5. Processes of long-term coastal evolution and their mathematical modelling : Application to the Mozambican coast

    Author : JAIME PALALANE; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; coastal evolution; coastal processes; mathematical modelling; Mozambican coast; coastal erosion; Macaneta; spit model; long-term evolution;

    Abstract : Different processes in response to the action of natural driven forces and the human interference on coastal systems act together, contributing to shape the coast. Coastal evolution models have been developed as useful tools to better understand the contribution of different processes on observed coastal changes, and also to anticipate future evolution in response to different actions and interventions taking place along the coast.
