1. Experimental and Numerical Investigations of Ultra-Cold Atoms
Abstract : I have been one of the main responsible for building a new laboratory for Bose-Einstein condensation with 87Rb. In particular, the experimental setup has been designed for performing experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates load into optical lattices of variable geometries. All parts essential for Bose-Einstein condensation are in place. READ MORE

2. Cold atoms in a variety of optical lattice potentials
Abstract : In this thesis, both experimental achievements and theoretical preparatory investigationsfor future experiments are introduced. The experiments presentedare performed with the set-up used for laser cooling and trapping of rubidiumatoms, and the theoretical examinations are adopted for intended experimentson Bose-Einstein Condensates. 3. Gaps, Traps and Lattices - Correlations in Small Quantum Systems
Abstract : This dissertation investigates properties of two-dimensional many-body systems. Studies are performed using the Spin-Density Functional Theory with the Local Spin-Density Approximation, and numerical exact diagonalization. READ MORE

4. Numerical studies of spin chains and cold atoms in optical lattices
Abstract : An important, but also difficult, research field in condensed matter physics is that of strongly correlated systems. This thesis considers two topics in this field. The first topic is disorder and frustration in spin models. The introduction of disorder into quantum spin chains creates a complex problem. READ MORE

5. Atomic transport in optical lattices
Abstract : This thesis includes both experimental and theoretical investigations of fluctuation-induced transport phenomena, presented in a series of nine papers, by studies of the dynamics of cold atoms in dissipative optical lattices. With standard laser cooling techniques about 108 cesium atoms are accumulated, cooled to a few μK, and transferred into a dissipative optical lattice. READ MORE
