  1. 1. Spectral Image Processing with Applications in Biotechnology and Pathology

    Author : Milan Gavrilovic; Carolina Wählby; Ewert Bengtsson; Ingrid Carlbom; Robert Murphy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; color theory; light microscopy; spectral imaging; image analysis; digital image processing; mathematical modeling; estimation; noise models; spectral decomposition; color decomposition; colocalization; cross-talk; autofluorescence; tissue separation; prostate cancer; biomedical applications; molecular biotechnology; histopathology; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Color theory was first formalized in the seventeenth century by Isaac Newton just a couple of decades after the first microscope was built. But it was not until the twentieth century that technological advances led to the integration of color theory, optical spectroscopy and light microscopy through spectral image processing. READ MORE

  2. 2. Plasma membrane order; the role of cholesterol and links to actin filaments

    Author : Jelena Dinic; Ingela Parmryd; Gerrit van Meer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Membrane Organization; Lipid rafts; Actin; Laurdan; di-4-ANEPPDHQ; Cholesterol; T cell signaling; Colocalization; Generalized Polarization; Cell Biology; cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The connection between T cell activation, plasma membrane order and actin filament dynamics was the main focus of this study. Laurdan and di-4-ANEPPDHQ, membrane order sensing probes, were shown to report only on lipid packing rather than being influenced by the presence of membrane-inserted peptides justifying their use in membrane order studies. 3. 3. Assay development for studies of G protein-coupled receptors at the single-molecule level

    Author : Olov Wahlsten; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TIRF microscopy; colocalization; drug discovery; QCM-D; GPCR; pharmacodynamics; kinetics; equilibrium fluctuation analysis;

    Abstract : G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), also known as seven transmembrane (7TM) receptors,is the largest family of cell surface receptors. These receptors play a key role in transmittinga wide variety of signals across the cell membrane and are involved in physiologicalprocesses such as sensory transduction, cell-cell communication, neuronal transmission,and hormonal signaling. 4. 4. Oxygen-dependent regulation of transcription by the hypoxia-inducible factor-1

    Author : Jorge Lira Ruas; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hypoxia; HIF-1; protein degradation; transcription; coactivators; CBP; subcellular localization; C1-tetrahydrofolate synthase;

    Abstract : Under limited oxygen availability (hypoxia) cells undergo rapid reprogramming in order to survive in the new environment until normoxic conditions are re-established. The observation that hypoxia can induce the expression of genes involved in erythropoiesis, angiogenesis and glucose metabolism among others, led to the identification of the hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) as a master regulator of the hypoxia-response pathway. 5. 5. The N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit NR3A : cloning, expression and interacting proteins

    Author : Maria Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the subunit NR3A, which together with subunits NR1, NR2A-NR2D and NR3B builds the excitatory glutamate receptor N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). The receptor is most likely a tetramer, containing at least one NR1, probably two NR2 and sometimes one NR3 subunit. READ MORE
