    Author : Linda Handlin; Kerstin Uvnäs-Moberg; Mikael Ejdebäck; Maria Petersson; Eva Nissen; Bo Algers; Rebecca Johnson; Högskolan i Skövde; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; oxytocin; cortisol; prolactin; ACTH; blood pressure; medical interventions; sensory stimulation; interaction; Natural sciences; Naturvetenskap;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to investigate hormonal and physiological effects in mothers during a breastfeeding session and in dogs and their owners in response to short-term interaction. In study one, sixty-six mothers receiving either exogenous oxytocin infusion and/or epidural analgesia (EDA) during labor or intramuscular oxytocin injection post partum were studied. READ MORE

  2. 2. Evolutionary consequences of maternal effects and stress

    Author : Piotr K. Rowiński; Björn Rogell; Karl Gotthard; Katja Räsänen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; parental effects; meta-analysis; development time; bet-hedging; brain size; evolutionary potential; unpredictable environments; zoologisk ekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Maternal effects occur when maternal environment or phenotype influence offspring phenotype, in addition to genetic contribution of the mother. As maternal effects often influence phenotypes that are under natural selection, they hence have evolutionary consequences. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mostly Panel Econometrics : Essays on Asymptotic Analysis and Enhanced Inference

    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Econometrics; Panel Data; Factor Models; Bootstrap; Forecasting; Non-Stationary Data; Common Correlated Effects; CCE;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of five chapters which focus on panel data theory. Four of them analyze explicit panel data models and one chapter deals with time series forecasting model, where external panel data help us estimate unobserved explanatory variables. READ MORE

  4. 4. Metabolic effects of interleukin-6

    Author : Ingrid Wernstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : IL-6; cytokine; obesity; energy expenditure; lipolysis; ASP; sympathetic nervous system; exercise; -174 G C IL-6 polymorphism; fat mass; stress response; cerebrospinal fluid;

    Abstract : The levels of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the circulation are positively correlated with indices of obesity and metabolic disturbances. Paradoxically, plasma IL-6 levels increase markedly during prolonged and strenuous exercise, mainly due to increased production and release from working skeletal muscle. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lipids in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and effects on human health

    Author : Jan Mraz; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : There is evidence that n-3 fatty acids (FA), especially EPA and DHA, are beneficial for human health. This thesis examined factors influencing FA composition in common carp flesh, sought to develop a procedure for long-term sustainable culture of common carp with improved muscle lipid quality (omega 3 carp) and studied the health benefits of eating such carp in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
