   Abstract : The main aim of this thesis was to investigate literacy, ‘theory of mind’ (ToM) and narrative ability in children who had screened positive for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) (comprehensively assessed for neuropsychiatric problems), and relate the findings to their structural linguistic capacity, as measured by language tests at the word and sentence levels. Considering the important roles of families in shaping children’s language socialisation, another aim was to explore the parental experiences of having a child go through the neuropsychiatric and language diagnostic process.    Abstract : Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to examine some aspects of conversation partners (CP) of people with communication disorder caused by stroke-induced aphasia or Parkinson’s disease (PwCD). Central questions were (i) can conversation partners learn to adapt their communicative behaviour in conversation to the specific needs of the persons with communication impairment and (ii) are there any associations between characteristics of the participants in conversation and the ability to be a supportive communication partner?    Abstract : Studies were performed to improve iodine deficiency control programs. Goitre rates and cassava processing practices were compared in three Central African Republic (CAR) populations. Short-cuts in cassava processing were associated with elevated urinary thiocyanate and increased goitre rates, suggesting a goitrogenic effect in one population. READ MORE
