11. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities
Abstract : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis). READ MORE

12. Effects of community- and government-managed marine protected areas on tropical seagrass and coral communities
Abstract : Tropical seagrass beds and coral reefs are among the most productive and diverse ecosystems on Earth and provide ecosystem services, such as fish production and coastal protection, and support livelihoods of millions of people. At the same time, these ecosystems are threatened globally by anthropogenic disturbances, such as overfishing, pollution and global warming. READ MORE

13. Effects of pharmaceuticals on natural microbial communities: Tolerance development, mixture toxicity and synergistic interactions
Abstract : Due to our extensive use of pharmaceuticals, low concentrations (picomol-nanomol/L) end up in the aquatic environment. Antibiotics comprise a group of pharmaceuticals specifically designed to disrupt microbial biochemical processes, and might therefore in particular have detrimental effects on microbial communities in the environment. 14. Pesticide impact of intensive banana production on aquatic ecosystems in Costa Rica
Abstract : A combination of chemical and biological studies demonstrated extensive surface water contamination, the occurrence of pesticides in sediments, especially near the banana plantation areas, and biological impacts. Pesticides were even found in the downstream waters of the Tortuguero conservation area, a highly diverse wetland that protects several endangered species. READ MORE

15. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem
Abstract : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces.
