  1. 6. Criteria for Machinability Evaluation of Compacted Graphite Iron Materials : Design and Production Planning Perspective on Cylinder Block Manufacturing

    Author : Anders Berglund; Cornel Mihai Nicolescu; Leonardo De Chiffre; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Metal Cutting; Compacted Graphite Iron CGI ; Machinability; Design of Experiments DoE ; Inverse Finite Element FE Modelling; Simulated Milling Method; SRA - Produktion; SRA - Production;

    Abstract : The Swedish truck industry is looking for new material solutions to achieve lighter engines with increased strength to meet customer demands and to fulfil the new regulations for more environmentally friendly trucks. This could be achieved by increasing the peak pressure in the cylinders. READ MORE

  2. 7. On the Microstructure and the Thermal Conductivity in Compacted Graphite Iron

    Author : Martin Selin; Ingvar L. Svensson; Daniel Holmgren; Lars Nyborg; Kenneth Hamberg; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Compacted graphite iron; Microstructure; Thermal conductivity; Ferrite; Cementite; Nodularity; Mathematical modelling; Laser flash technique; Austempering;

    Abstract : Compacted graphite iron (CGI) is a cast iron material that has gained much attention due to its attractive material properties which are intermediate between those of grey and ductile cast iron. In the automotive industry compacted graphite iron has become an interesting alternative material to grey cast iron in components like cylinder blocks or cylinder heads. READ MORE

  3. 8. Tribological and Mechanical Behaviour of Lamellar and Compacted Graphite Irons in Engine Applications

    Author : Rohollah Ghasemi; Anders Professor; Lennart Assistance professor; Bengt-Göran Rosén; Anders Jarfors; Lennart Elmquist; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Sliding wear; abrasive wear; graphite lubricating performance; matrix deformation; lamellar graphite iron; high-Si compacted graphite iron;

    Abstract : There has been much discussion about the beneficial uses of lamellar graphite iron in piston rings–cylinder liner systems, where a good combinations of both thermal and tribological properties are essential. The excellent tribological performance of lamellar iron under such sliding conditions is principally associated with lubrication behaviour of the graphite particles which are distributed as lamellas throughout the matrix. 4. 9. Morphological characterization of primary austenite in cast iron

    Author : Juan Carlos Hernando; Attila Diószegi; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lamellar Graphite Iron; Solidification; Primary Austenite; Microstructure Evolution; Dendritic coarsening; Compacted Graphite Iron; Magnesium Fading; Nodularity;

    Abstract : Automotive industry products portfolio includes a wide variety of complex‐shaped cast iron products, such as truck engine components, that need to withstand a constant trend of higher demands, especially urged by stricter environmental regulations on emissions. Combined with this continued demand on properties improvement, cast iron industry faces a process problem related to the lack of understanding of solidification and mechanisms behind defect formation. 5. 10. Microstructure Formation and Mechanical Properties in Compacted Graphite Iron

    Author : Mathias König; Ingvar L. Svensson; Magnus Wessén; Torsten Sjögren; Jönköping University; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cast iron; CGI; Microstructure formation; Mechanical properties;

    Abstract : Compacted graphite iron is rapidly becoming an attractive alternative for engine applications in the automotive industry. The improved process control now available that allows CGI components to be cast in a reproducible and reliable way has been the driving force for this development. READ MORE
