1. Comparative Studies of Vocational Education and Training
Abstract : The thesis consists of an introduction and three studies, which are comparative sociological and institutional analyses of a number of countries' publicly regulated vocational education and training systems at upper secondary and post-secondary level. Official regulation of programme content and curricula - the main empirical material - is interpreted, and focus is directed on aspects which distinguish between, among others, general and vocational elements of teaching, learning and training. 2. Birds as a Model for Comparative Genomic Studies
Abstract : Comparative genomics provides a tool to investigate large biological datasets, i.e. genomic datasets. In my thesis I focused on inferring patterns of selection in coding and non-coding regions of avian genomes. READ MORE

3. Comparative Genomics of Endosymbiotic Bacteria
Abstract : Genomes of intracellular bacteria are thought to be the products of reductive evolution. They have evolved from ancestral genomes of free-living bacteria through a process of massive gene loss. READ MORE

4. Bioinformatic Analysis of Mutation and Selection in the Vertebrate Non-coding Genome
Abstract : The majority of the vertebrate genome sequence is not coding for proteins. In recent years, the evolution of this noncoding fraction of the genome has gained interest. These studies have been greatly facilitated by the availability of full genome sequences. READ MORE

5. Analysis of large-scale metagenomic data
Abstract : The topic of this thesis is the analysis of large data sets of DNA sequence data produced from modern high-throughput DNA sequencing machines. Using such machines to sequence the genetic content of a microbial community produces a metagenome. This thesis comprises three research papers, all connected to the study of large metagenomic data sets. READ MORE
