6. Experimental study of turbulent flows through pipe bends
Abstract : This thesis deals with turbulent flows in 90 degree curved pipes of circular cross-section. The flow cases investigated experimentally are turbulent flow with and without an additional motion, swirling or pulsating, superposed on the primary flow. READ MORE

7. Transition delay in boundary-layer flows via reactive control
Abstract : Transition delay in boundary-layer flows is achieved via reactive control of flow instabilities, i.e. Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves. Adaptive and model-based control techniques are investigated by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and experiments. READ MORE

8. Suspensions of finite-size rigid particles in laminar and turbulent flows
Abstract : Dispersed multiphase flows occur in many biological, engineering and geophysical applications. Understanding the behavior of suspensions is a difficult task. In the present work, we numerically study the behavior of suspensions of finite-size rigid particles in different flows. READ MORE

9. Stability analysis and inertial regimes in complex flows
Abstract : In this work we rst study the non-Newtonian effects on the inertial instabilities in shear flows and second the inertial suspensions of finite size rigid particles by means of numerical simulations. In the first part, both inelastic (Carreau) and elastic models (Oldroyd-B and FENE-P) have been employed to examine the main features of the non-Newtonian fluids in several congurations; flow past a circular cylinder, in a lid-driven cavity and in a channel. 10. Experimental Studies of Complex Flows through Image-Based Techniques
Abstract : This thesis deals with the development of experimental techniques for the study of complex flows inspired to a large extent by the papermaking process. In particular one part of this thesis is devoted to the development of laboratory experiments based on index-of-refraction matching and imaging techniques to study the behavior of dilute and concentrated suspension of elongated particles.
