  1. 11. Performance Studies and Star Tracking for PoGOLite

    Author : Cecilia Marini Bettolo; Mark Pearce; Nicolas Produit; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polarization; pulsars; x-ray; PoGOLite; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik;

    Abstract : PoGOLite is a balloon-borne experiment, which will study polarized soft γ-ray emissionfrom astrophysical targets in the 25-80 keV energy range by applying well-typephoswich detector technology. Polarized γ-rays are expected from a wide variety of sources including rotation-powered pulsars, accreting black holes and neutron stars,and jet-dominated active galaxies. READ MORE

  2. 12. Monte Carlo particle transport codes for ion beam therapy treatment planning : Validation, development and applications

    Author : Till Tobias Böhlen; Irena Gudowska; Oliver Jäkel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Monte Carlo; ion beam therapy; treatment planning; cancer therapy; microdosimetry; Medical Radiation Physics; medicinsk strålningsfysik;

    Abstract : External radiotherapy with proton and ion beams needs accurate tools for the dosimetric characterization of treatment fields. Monte Carlo (MC) particle transport codes, such as FLUKA and GEANT4, can be a valuable method to increase accuracy of dose calculations and to support various aspects of ion beam therapy (IBT), such as treatment planning and monitoring. 3. 13. Disruption Mitigation in Tokamaks with Massive Material Injection

    Author : Oskar Vallhagen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; shattered pellet injection; fusion plasma; disruption mitigation; runaway electron;

    Abstract : The sudden loss of confinement of the energy content of fusion plasmas in off-normal events, called disruptions, is among the most severe threats to the future of fusion energy based on the tokamak design. An efficient disruption mitigation system will therefore be of utmost importance for future large, high-current devices such as ITER. READ MORE

  4. 14. Observations of submillimeter galaxies and of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect toward clusters of galaxies

    Author : Daniel Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis describes observations of a population of high-redshift, dusty star-forming galaxies: thesubmillimeter (submm) galaxies. The submm galaxies detected so far are very massive and lumi-nous systems, with huge star-formation-rates (SFR>100Myr−1), large reservoirs of moleculargas (Mgas∼1×1010M) and large dynamical masses (Mdyn>1010M).
