  1. 1. Digital lines, Sturmian words, and continued fractions

    Author : Hanna Uscka-Wehlou; Christer Oscar Kiselman; Maciej Klimek; Gunilla Borgefors; Mikael Passare; Damien Jamet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; digital geometry; digital line; hierarchy of runs; combinatorics on words; Sturmian word; upper mechanical word; characteristic word; irrational slope; continued fraction; Gauss map; fixed point; Discrete mathematics; Diskret matematik; matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : In this thesis we present and solve selected problems arising from digital geometry and combinatorics on words. We consider digital straight lines and, equivalently, upper mechanical words with positive irrational slopes a... READ MORE

  2. 2. Computational dynamics – real and complex

    Author : Anna Belova; Warwick Tucker; Denis Gaidashev; Àlex Haro Provinciale; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Continued fractions; Generating functions; Rotation numbers; Rigorous computations; Interval analysis; Interval arithmetic; Multipliers; Quadratic map; Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : The PhD thesis considers four topics in dynamical systems and is based on one paper and three manuscripts.In Paper I we apply methods of interval analysis in order to compute the rigorous enclosure of rotation number. READ MORE

  3. 3. Multipoint Padé approximants used for piecewise rational interpolation and for interpolation to functions of Stieltjes' type

    Author : Jan Gelfgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Continued fractions; Hardy space; Padé approximant; series of Stieltjes;

    Abstract : A multipoint Padë approximant, R, to a function of Stieltjes1 type is determined.The function R has numerator of degree n-l and denominator of degree n.The 2n interpolation points must belong to the region where f is analytic,and if one non-real point is amongst the interpolation points its complex-conjugated point must too. 4. 4. Permutation Patterns, Continued Fractions, and a Group Determined by an Ordered Set

    Author : Anders Claesson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : We present six articles: In the first and second article we give the first few results on generalized pattern avoidance, focusing on patterns of type (1,2) or (2,1). There are twelve such patterns, and they fall into three classes with respect to being equidistributed. We use 1-23, 1-32, and 2-13 as representatives for these classes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Integrated starch and lignocellulose based biorefineries : Synergies and opportunities

    Author : Michael Persson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Process integration; Fermentation; Hydrolysis; Lignocellulosic Biomass; Wheat grain; Bioethanol;

    Abstract : The transition from a reliance on fossil resources to the use of renewables for the production of energy, fuels and chemicals is essential for ensuring the sustainability of continued human development. Plant-based biomass is a renewable resource which can be transformed into all of these products. READ MORE
