  1. 1. The role of cortico-basal ganglia systems in the construction of movement: Action selection and sequencing

    Author : Joel Sjöbom; Integrativ neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurophysiology; Electrophysiology; Voluntary movements; In-vivo; Motor Cortex; Corticostriatal; Basal Ganglia;

    Abstract : The cortico-basal ganglia system is instrumental in the construction of movement, through its involvement in aspects such as action selection, initiation/termination and sequencing, though the precise role of the different structures and how they collaborate on a network level to allow us to fluidly change from one behavior to another has long proven to be elusive.We have here recorded neuronal activity throughout the cortico-basal ganglia circuit in rats, in a series of projects in order to understand more about how some of these functions are controlled. 2. 2. The Role of the Cortico-Basal Ganglia-System in Voluntary Movements

    Author : Martin Tamté; Integrativ neurofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurophysiology; Electrophysiology; Pharmacology; Motor Systems; Voluntary movements; Philosophy; In vivo; Corticostriatal; Parkinson s disease; Dyskinesia; Levodopa; Multiple Electrode Arrays;

    Abstract : Bodies with multiple limbs and joints have endless possibilities to move around in their surrounding space. How the nervous system controls this amount of degrees of freedom in motor execution is a question under vigorous debate. READ MORE

  3. 3. Untangling Cortico-Striatal Circuitry and its Role in Health and Disease - A computational investigation

    Author : Jovana Belic; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Arvind Kumar; Abigail Morrison; Arthur Leblois; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cortico-striatal circuits; levodopa-induced dyskinesia; Parkinson’s disease; effective connectivity; cross-frequency coupling; corticostriatal network; network oscillations; GABAergic transmission. basal ganglia; striatum; cortex; fast spiking interneurons; medium spiny neurons; neuronal avalanches;

    Abstract : The basal ganglia (BG) play a critical role in a variety of regular motor and cognitive functions. Many brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s diseases, Huntington’s disease and dyskinesia, are directly related to malfunctions of the BG nuclei. READ MORE

  4. 4. Role of the dopamine system in motor skill learning : implications for neurodevelopmental disorders

    Author : Yu Qian; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Dopamine (DA), released by midbrain neurons, is critical for motor performance, motor skill learning, and corticostriatal synaptic plasticity. Dysregulation of DAergic signaling in corticostriatal circuitry has also been implicated in several highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which are often associated with deficits in fine motor skills. 5. 5. Functional MRI characterization of animal models of parkinsonism

    Author : Cyril Monnot; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurological disorder. It is characterized by the progressive development of motor symptoms - bradykinesia, resting tremor, muscular rigidity and difficulty with postural control - which serve as criterias for its clinical diagnosis.
