  1. 11. Plant Population Dynamics and Biotic Interactions in two Forest Herbs

    Author : Christel Gustafsson; Martin Zobel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Sanicula europaea; Dentaria bulbifera; Cost of reproduction; grazing; competition; dispersal limitation; patch suitability; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : In Sweden today, deciduous woodlands are often restricted to small isolated remnants of what it once was. Managing practices have changed concerning both cattle grazing and logging. Thus, dispersal, habitat requirements and their importance for forest species distributions become a relevant issue. READ MORE

  2. 12. Population Differentiation in Solidago virgaurea along Altitudinal Gradients

    Author : Anna Bergsten; Jon Ågren; Staffan Karlsson; Kari Lehtilä; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; population differentiation; altitudinal gradient; plant nutrient status; resorption efficiency; resorption proficiency; flowering phenology; countergradient variation; reproductive effort; flower production; cost of reproduction; Biology; Biologi; Other biology; Övrig biologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Altitudinal gradients offer attractive opportunities for studies of population differentiation in response to environmental heterogeneity. In this thesis, I examined population differentiation along altitudinal gradients by combining common-garden experiments with field studies and experiments in alpine, subalpine and boreal populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea. 3. 13. Metapopulations dynamics and sex-specific resource allocation in Silene dioica

    Author : Elisabet Peedu; Pär Ingvarsson; Barbara Giles; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Silene dioica; Skeppvik Archipelago; Metapopulation Dynamics; Population Genetic Structuring; Genetic Diversity; Gene Flow; Sex-Specific Resource Allocation; Cost of Reproduction; Life-History Theory; Sexual Dimorphism; Reproductive Effort; biology; biologi; evolutionär genetik; evolutionary genetics; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : Rising archipelagos provide unique settings for the study of the temporal and spatial dynamics of their biota. This offers the possibility to study the ecology and genetics of early successional processes; both between islands that differ in age and within islands when already established organisms have to keep pace with the changing environment. 4. 14. Growth conditions and individual quality in starlings

    Author : Martin Granbom; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; cost of reproduction; individual quality; long-term effects; early condition; starling; Sturnus vulgaris;

    Abstract : Variation in growth conditions during ontogeny may result in permanent differences in individual quality. This thesis focuses on how starlings are affected by environmental variation during the nestling period. Both landscape differences in food availability and experimental food supplementation affected survival and growth of nestlings. READ MORE

  5. 15. The evolution of courtship rituals

    Author : Carl Adam Wachtmeister; Innes Cuthill; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : The fact that many animals engage in highly ornamented and conspicuous display behaviours in connection with reproduction has received much attention in zoology ever since Darwin launched his theory of sexual selection. This thesis intends to investigate the evolution of such display behaviour. READ MORE
