  1. 1. Stability of plane Couette flow and pipe Poiseuille flow

    Author : Per-Olov Åsén; Gunilla Kreiss; Jonathan Goodman; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrodynamic stability; plane Couette flow; pipe Poiseuille flow; direct numerical simulations; resolvent; Fluid mechanics; Strömningsmekanik;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns the stability of plane Couette flow and pipe Poiseuille flow in three space dimensions. The mathematical model for both flows is the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations. Both analytical and numerical techniques are used. We present new results for the resolvent corresponding to both flows. READ MORE

  2. 2. Stability results for viscous shock waves and plane Couette flow

    Author : Mattias Liefvendahl; KTH; []
    Keywords : nonlinear stability; shock waves; Couette flow; Chebyshev spectral method; resolvent estimates; threshold amplitudes;

  3. 3. Computational studies of flow in Couette Rheometer and particle interaction in non-Newtonian fluids

    Author : Naser Hamedi; Strömningsteknik; []
    Keywords : Non-Newtonian fluids; Correction factor; Fluid properties; Couette Rheometer; Particle interaction; Sedimentation; Computational Fluid dynamics; Plug flow; Herschel Bulkley; Power-law fluid; Immeresed boundary method;

    Abstract : This work aims to study the flow of non-Newtonian fluids and has two main goals. First, the power-law and Herschel Bulkley fluids are studied in a Couette rheometer. Second, the static and dynamic interaction of dual particles in power-law fluid are investigated. READ MORE

  4. 4. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow in plane and cylindrical geometries

    Author : Jukka Komminaho; KTH; []
    Keywords : turbulence; plane Couette flow; pipe flow; laminar-turbulent transition; direct numerical simulation; spectral methods;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with numerical simulation of turbulentflows in geometrically simple cases. Both plane and cylindricalgeometries are used. The simplicity of the geometry allows theuse of spectral methods which yield a very high accuracy usingrelatively few grid points. A spectral method for planegeometries is implemented on a parallel computer. READ MORE

  5. 5. Rock grouting design: Rheological aspects and radial flow visualizations with ultrasound

    Author : John Shamu; Stefan Larsson; Ulf Håkansson; Liangchao Zou; Chadi El Mohtar; KTH; []
    Keywords : ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cement grouts; grouting; yield stress fluid YSF ; thixotropy; critical shear rate; radial flow; wall slip; Bingham model; Cementbaserade injekteringsmedels; injektering; icke-Newtonska vätskors; tixotropi; kritisk deformationshastigheten; radiella strömning; glidning; Bingham modell; Jord- och bergmekanik; Soil and Rock Mechanics;

    Abstract : The rheological properties of cement-based grouts play a crucial role indetermining the final spread in grouted rock formations. In rheological terms,cement grouts are known to be complex time-dependent yield stress fluids,but their steady flow behavior is often described by the simple Binghamconstitutive law. READ MORE
