  1. 1. Computational Modelling of Gene Regulation in Cancer : Coding the noncoding genome

    Author : Husen Muhammad Umer; Jan Komorowski; Claes Wadelius; Jan Korbel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Regulatory elements; gene regulation; cancer; motif; integrative database; software solutions for cancer data; Bioinformatics; Bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Technological advancements have enabled quantification of processes within and around us. The information stored within our body converts into petabytes of data. Processing and learning from such data requires comprehensive computational programs and software systems. READ MORE

  2. 2. Modulation of inflammation by immunostimulatory DNA

    Author : Jan Bjersing; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : CpG DNA; arthritis; phosphodiester; phosphorothioate; nucleotide modification; cytokines; chemokines; FcgammaR; B cell subsets.;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the roles of different types of DNA in inflammatory responses. We compared the immune responses to nuclease-protected phosphorothioate oligodeoxynucleotides (S-ODNs) and phosphodiester oligodeoxynucleotides (O-ODNs) that either contained or lacked CpG motifs. 3. 3. Suppressive DNA vaccination in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

    Author : Anna Lobell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DNA vaccination; autoimmunity; experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis; multiple sclerosis; T cell receptor; CpG motif; myelin basic protein; myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development of a novel method to suppress an organ-specific autoimmune disease, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), by vaccination with DNA encoding autoantigenic peptides. DNA vaccination can produce long-term immunity and generate antigen-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells. READ MORE

  4. 4. Regulation of NK cell activity : studies of DAP12-associated receptors in immune synapse formation and in responses to cytomegalovirus infection

    Author : Hanna Sjölin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : NK cells; DAP12; MCMV Cytokines; Receptors; Signaling; packages;

    Abstract : Natural killer (NK) cell effector functions are important for innate resistance against tumor cells and viral infections. NK cells display a broad range of inhibitory and activating receptors on the cell surface, which ensure specificity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ageing and inflammation with focus on end-stage renal diseases : genetic and epigenetic factors

    Author : Karin Luttropp; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The presence of ageing-associated disorders at a relatively young age in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) has led to the hypothesis that CKD is characterized by accelerated ageing, resulting in a marked discrepancy between chronological and biological age. Factors that accelerate biological ageing, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins, impact the processes of cellular senescence and/or apoptosis, thereby shortening the life span of cells, and consequently, of the organism as a whole.
