  1. 16. The functional role of the MUC17-based glycocalyx

    Author : Sofia Jäverfelt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intestine; Glycocalyx; Membrane mucin; Host defenses;

    Abstract : Our gastrointestinal tract harbors trillions of bacteria that are chemically and spatially separated from the intestinal epithelium. Maintaining an intact mucosal barrier is essential as increased bacterial contact is associated with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn´s disease. READ MORE

  2. 17. Identification and characterization of WASP and FKBP-like protein

    Author : Ing-Marie Viklund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation of the colon which together with the related Crohn s disease (CD) represent the major forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD is believed to arise in a dysfunctional intestinal barrier which allows the normal gut flora to trigger an unwanted chronic immune response in genetically susceptible individuals. READ MORE

  3. 18. Genetic Variation and Expression of the IRF5 Gene in Autoimmune Diseases

    Author : Gudlaug Thora Kristjansdottir; Ann-Christine Syvänen; Lars Rönnblom; Gunnel Nordmark; Unnur Þorsteinsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medical genetics; Medicinsk genetik; Genetics; genetik;

    Abstract : The interferon regulatory factor 5 (IRF5) gene encodes a transcription factor that plays an important role in the innate as well as in the cell-mediated immune response. The IRF5 gene has received considerable attention since it was shown to be associated with two autoimmune diseases; systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). READ MORE

  4. 19. Bile Acid Induced Diarrhoea Pathophysiological and Clinical Aspects

    Author : Antal Bajor; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Diarrhoea; bile acid transport; bile acid synthesis; 75SeHCAT reproducibility; C4; budesonide; collagenous colitis; in vitro; malabsorption; ASBT; intestinal secretion; potential difference; manometry;

    Abstract : A common cause for referral to gastroenterologists is chronic watery diarrhoea. Approximately 40% of these patients have idiopathic bile acid malabsorption (BAM) ? a condition with unknown aetiology. The 75SeHCAT test, which correlates inversely with faecal excretion and hepatic synthesis of bile acids, is used to diagnose BAM. READ MORE

  5. 20. Regulation of mucosal inflammation by fibroblasts

    Author : Tanya (De L.) Karlson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : inflammatory bowel diseases; fibroblasts; CD40; C-EBPbeta; apoptosis; TGF-beta;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Acute inflammation in the bowel, a response of the immune system to infections or trauma, is probably a frequent but localized event, but when the barrier is repaired and the infection cleared, it is quickly followed by wound healing and resolution. However, in some individuals these mechanisms are not effective and the inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn?s disease and ulcerative colitis result. READ MORE
