21. Blood-Brain Barrier Transport : Investigation of Active Efflux using Positron Emission Tomography and Modelling Studies
Abstract : This thesis examines the transport of exogenous molecules across the blood-brain barrier (BBB), focusing on active efflux, using positron emission tomography (PET), computer simulation and modelling. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) inhibition was studied using [11C]verapamil and [11C]hydroxyurea was investigated as a new marker for active efflux transport. READ MORE

22. Circumventing drug resistance : Studies exploring the expediency of a total cell kill chemoresistance assay
Abstract : Cellular resistance to anti-cancer drugs is considered to be the major cause of treatment failure in clinical practice. The present studies have therefore focused on ways to circumvent resistance as evaluated by an in vitro chemoresistance assay. READ MORE

23. Orthogeriatric anaesthesia - studies on the bone cement implantation syndrome, risk prediction and intraoperative haemodynamics
Abstract : The bone cementation implantation syndrome (BCIS), as seen in orthopaedic patients, is characterised by intraoperative hypotension and hypoxia and loss of consciousness around the time of bone cementation. In a retrospective study, the incidence of and risk factors for the BCIS and its impact on mortality during cemented hemiarthroplasty for hip fracture were evaluated. READ MORE

24. Pursuing the fever trail : pathogenesis of blood-stage P. falciparum malaria and pregnancy
Abstract : The burden of the most virulent form of human malarias, Plasmodium falciparum, is concentrated among young children and pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. Excessive sequestration of parasite-infected red blood cells (pRBCs) in the capillary beds of different organs is the hallmark of P. READ MORE

25. Bit-Wise Decoders for Coded Modulation and Broadcast Coded Slotted ALOHA
Abstract : This thesis deals with two aspects of wireless communications. The first aspect is about efficient point-to-point data transmission. To achieve high spectral efficiency, coded modulation, which is a concatenation of higher order modulation with error correction coding, is used. READ MORE
