  1. 1. Macromolecular Matchmaking : Mechanisms and Biology of Bacterial Small RNAs

    Author : Erik Holmqvist; E. Gerhart H. Wagner; Udo Bläsi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Small RNA; sRNA; non-coding RNA; antisense; gene regulation; post-transcriptional regulation; translational control; outer membrane protein; OmpA; MicA; biofilm; flagella; curli; bistability; Lrp; MicF; CsgD; FlgM; OmrA; OmrB; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Cells sense the properties of the surrounding environment and convert this information into changes in gene expression. Bacteria are, in contrast to many multi-cellular eukaryotes, remarkable in their ability to cope with rapid environmental changes and to endure harsh and extreme milieus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation of biofilm formation in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli Nissle 1917

    Author : Cláudia Monteiro; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Bacteria have the ability to grow in cell communities designated biofilms. This mode of growth is widespread and offers numerous advantages to the bacteria in terms of survival, persistence and propagation. Bacteria have developed different ways of building up a biofilm. READ MORE

  3. 3. GGDEF-EAL domain proteins in bacterial physiology

    Author : Abdul Kader; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : GGDEF and EAL domain proteins were identified in the chromosome of many bacteria. GGDEF domain proteins are generally diguanyl cyclases which synthesize the secondary messenger cyclic di-GMP. EAL domain proteins are generally c-di-GMP specific phosphodiesterase which degrade c-di-GMP. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterization of c-di-GMP signaling in Salmonella typhimurium

    Author : Roger Simm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Signal transduction via cyclic nucleotides is a general mechanism utilized by cells from all kingdoms of life. Identification of cyclic diguanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) as an allosteric activator of the cellulose synthase in Gluconacetobacter xylinus 20 years ago, paved the way for the discovery of a novel general signalling system which is unique to bacteria. 5. 5. Regulatory networks of c-di-GMP signalling involved in biofilm formation, motility and host pathogen interactions in Salmonella typhimurium

    Author : Irfan Ahmad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Adaptation to altered environmental conditions is one of the fundamental bacterial characteristics. The ubiquitous second messenger c-di-GMP plays a key role to adopt bacterial behaviour. Transition from motility to sessility and from acute infection to chronic infection is regulated by c-di-GMP signalling in many bacteria. READ MORE
