1. Genetic analyses of multiple myeloma and related plasma cell dyscrasias
Abstract : Acquired genetic changes have proved to be of diagnostic and prognostic importance in different hematologic malignancies as well as in some solid tumor types. However, although multiple myeloma (MM), an incurable disease, and its proceeding stage monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) are quite common, little is known about the karyotypic features of these plasma cell dyscrasias. 2. Trisomies in Hematologic Malignancies
Abstract : Acquired clonal chromosome aberrations, closely associated with leukemogenesis, are found in many hematologic malignancies. Although the balanced rearrangements, such as translocations and inversions, are the ones most commonly thought of in the context of leukemias, gains of chromosomes ? e.g.. READ MORE

3. Gene Expression Studies of Hematologic Malignacies
Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to characterize hematologic malignancies using gene expression profiling in order to obtain an improved classification and to study deregulated transcriptional networks in leukemia. In the first study (Article I), the gene expression profiles of hematologic cell lines were analyzed to investigate whether such cell lines maintain expression profiles that are characteristic of their primary genetic changes. 4. Interphase cytogenetics and cytokine therapy in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia
Abstract : Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) comprise a group of clonal hematopoietic bone marrow cell disorders, characterized by a variable degree of anemia, granulocytopenia and/or thrombocytopenia and with a substantial risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (MDS-AML). In the present thesis a method based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was developed which allows cytogenetic studies on morphological identified peripheral blood and bone marrow cells (MGG/FISH). 5. Genetic studies of acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Abstract : Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric malignancy, comprising approximately 25% of all childhood cancers. A huge improvement in outcome of children with ALL during the last 20 years has resulted in remission rates exceeding 95% and a 5 year event-free-survival approaching 80%. READ MORE
