  1. 1. Glucocorticosteroid effects on cytokine production: studies in a glucocorticosteroid resistance model and in allergic airway disease

    Author : Susanne Larsson; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; GM-CSF; cytokine; glucocorticoids; budesonide; IL-2; IL-4; IL-12; asthma; allergic rhinitis; allergic airway inflammation; Respiratory system; Andningsorganen;

    Abstract : Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) are potent anti-inflammatory drugs, probably due to inhibitory effects on cytokine production. However, a small number of asthma patients seem GCS-resistant. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-2(IL-2) and IL-4, produced during allergic airway inflammation have been proposed to induce the resistance to GCS. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hormone replacement therapy in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Helena Forsblad d'Elia; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rheumatoid arthritis; randomised controlled trials; hormone replacement therapy; estrogen; osteoporosis; bone mineral density; bone remodelling; cartilage remodelling; cytokines; insulin-like growth factor 1;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is 2-3 times more frequent in women as compared to men. The peak incidence in women coincides with the years around the menopause and the course of RA is also influenced by events associated with hormonal alterations. READ MORE

  3. 3. Activation of murine cytotoxic cells with interelukin-2 and the bacterial superantigen staphylococcal entertoxin A

    Author : Hans Belfrage; Lund Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immunologi; transplantation; serology; Immunology; cytokine; tolerance; LAK; NK; serologi; CTL; Staphylococcal enterotoxin A; SEA; Interleukin-2; murine; deletion; anergy;

    Abstract : Natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes are the major effector cells that can recognize and kill tumor cells. NK cells have a constitutive cytotoxic activity and kill a wide spectrum of tumor cells while T cells recognize specific tumor antigens and need to be activated through their TCR to differentiate into cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killers or T helper cells. 4. 4. In vitro Studies of β-cell Death and Survival. Modulation by Adenoviral Vectors and Bcl-2 Overexpression

    Author : Andreea Roxana Barbu; Nils Welsh; Decio Eiziric; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; β-cell; cytokine; mitochondrial membrane potential; Bcl-2; Adenoviral vector; Adenovirus; IFN-α; Diabetes; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes is a multifactorial disease resulting from the selective destruction of insulin-producing β-cells within the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. The mechanisms of β-cell death are not fully understood but cytokines are important mediators of this process. READ MORE

  5. 5. Intestinal ischemia and reperfusion. Proinflammatory response and organ dysfunction

    Author : Knut Olanders; Lund Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; Surgery; inflammation; cytokine; leukocyte; reperfusion; ischemia; permeability; Intestine; endothelium;

    Abstract : Intestinal I/R is considered to be an important initiating event in several pathophysiological conditions such as trauma, bleeding, sepsis and pancreatitis, frequently leading to concomitant both single and potentially multiple organ dysfunction. The purpose of this thesis was to study mechanims underlying the development of multiple organ dysfunction, with special focus on intercellular proinflammatory regulation in the concurrent development of tissue injury.
