1. Cytokine responses in metal-induced allergic contact dermatitis : Relationship to in vivo responses and implication for in vitro diagnosis
Abstract : Transition metals such as nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), palladium (Pd), chromium (Cr) and gold (Au) are widely used as alloys in jewelry and biomaterials such as orthodontic and orthopaedic appliances. These metals also cause cell-mediated allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) reactions in a significant proportion of the population upon prolonged direct exposure. READ MORE

2. Malaria during pregnancy and childhood : A focus on soluble mediators and neutrophils
Abstract : In areas where malaria is endemic, pregnant women and children bear the main burden of severe and life-threatening malarial disease. The aim of this work was to study the impact of Plasmodium falciparum infection on inflammatory responses in pregnant women and children residing in African countries. READ MORE

3. Cytokine studies in the generation and treatment of IgE-mediated allergy
Abstract : So called Th2 cytokines, such as IL-4 and IL-13 are responsible for the formation of IgE antibodies, the effector antibody in atopic allergy. Cytokines of Th1 type, for example IFN-g, inhibit these responses. This thesis describes work aimed at elucidating the cytokine production underlying IgE-mediated allergy. READ MORE

4. Early life cytokines, viral infections and IgE-mediated allergic disease
Abstract : Background: The reasons why some individuals become IgE-sensitised and allergic are largely unknown, though genetic- and early life environmental factors seem to be of importance. Objective: The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the relationship between IgE-sensitisation and allergic disease, viral infections, genetic markers and early life cytokines. 5. Immune complex induced IgG1-rheumatoid factor production
Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic crippling disease mainly characterised by inflammation in the joints. Most patients with rheumatoid arthritis are seropositive, i.e. have increased serum levels of antibodies against the constant part of IgG, so called rheumatoid factors (RF). READ MORE
