  1. 6. The neuropeptide VIP and the IL-6 family of cytokines in bone : effects on bone resorption, cytokine expression and receptor signalling in osteoblasts and bone marrow stromal cells

    Author : Emma Persson; Ulf Lerner; Andreas Kindmark; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; osteoblast; bone resorption; cytokines; IL-6; neuropeptides; VIP; transcription factor; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Bone tissue is continuously degraded and rebuilt to respond to the needs of the body. Cells of the osteoblast lineage are responsible for the formation of bone, whereas the resorption of bone tissue is carried out by osteoclasts. READ MORE

  2. 7. On inflammatory cytokines and β-amyloid peptides in acute and chronic neurodegeneration

    Author : Roya Tehranian; Gianluigi Forloni; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Inflammation; Cytokines; Amyloid; Peptides; Nerve degeneration; Neurochemistry and Neurotoxicology; neurokemi och neurotoxikologi;

    Abstract : Insults to the brain as well as neurodegenerative diseases are known to elicit inflammatory responses. Inflammation in the brain can on one hand initiate processes that are harmful to the injured tissue and exacerbate the damage, leading to neuronal degeneration and glial activation, and on the other hand activate processes that may be necessary for repair mechanisms and regeneration. 3. 8. Cytokines and lipids in pregnancy – effects on developmental programming and placental nutrient transfer

    Author : Susanne Lager; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose tissue; amino acids; cytokines; developmental programming; free fatty acids; insulin resistance; interleukin-6; lipoprotein lipase; nutrient transport; placenta; toll-like receptor 4;

    Abstract : Metabolic disturbances, in particular those associated with nutritional challenges, that take place during development, both in utero and early postnatal life, have long-lasting health consequences on an individual. The most pronounced evidence of these challenges is a deviation in birth weight. READ MORE

  4. 9. Cytokines and their soluble receptors in nasal fluids from school children with allergic rhinitis

    Author : Mikael Benson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Allergic rhinitis; school children; cytokines; soluble cytokine receptors; nasal fluids;

    Abstract : Allergic inflammation is associated with a shift in the balance between cytokines produced by two T helper subsets (Th1 and Th2) towards a preponderance of Th2 cells. Interleukin (IL)-4 is produced by Th2 cells and interferon-g (IFN-g) by Th1 cells. The ratio IL-4/IFN-g is often used as a marker of the balance between the cytokines. READ MORE

  5. 10. Pathophysiological role and clinical relevance of cytokines in hypertensive heart failure. A combined clinical and experimental study

    Author : Espen Haugen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Heart failure; cytokines; elderly; hypertension; cardiac remodelling; interleukin 6; etanercept; adiponectin;

    Abstract : Although mortality due to heart failure has decreased significantly in the last decade since the introduction of ACE-inhibitors and ?-adrenergic receptor blockers in the management of heart failure, chronic heart failure is still one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality and has a very high frequency for readmission to hospitalization because of the aggravation of heart failure. This accounts for a significantly higher health-care expenditure that is twice as much the cost for cancer. READ MORE
