  1. 1. Standardization of Islet Isolation and Transplantation Variables

    Author : Andrew S Friberg; Olle Korsgren; Daniel Brandhorst; Paul R. V. Johnson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islet isolation; standardization; enzyme; gradient separation; digital imaging analysis; DIA; transplantation outcome; islet transplantation; prediction; Medical technology; Medicinsk teknik; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Currently, the transplantation of islets of Langerhans is a viable means to maintain control of blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia in defined populations with brittle type I diabetes mellitus or those requiring pancreatectomy. However, the process of islet isolation is highly variable and not all isolations result in islet numbers or quality suitable for transplantation. READ MORE

  2. 2. High Performance Fuels for Water-Cooled Reactor Systems

    Author : Kyle D. Johnson; Janne Wallenius; James Tulenko; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Nuclear fuel; accident tolerant fuel; uranium nitride; uranium silicide; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Investigation of nitride fuels and their properties has, for decades, been propelled on the basis of their desirable high metal densities and high thermal conductivities, both of which oer intrinsic advantages to performance, economy, and safety in fast and light water reactor systems. In this time several key obstacles have been identied as impeding the implementation of these fuels for commercial applications; namely chemical interactions with air and steam, the noted diculty in sintering of the material, and the high costs associated with the enrichment of 15N. 3. 3. A Spectroscopic Study of Interfacial Films: Internal Structuring, Stability, and Hydration

    Author : Jonathan F. D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; C. Magnus Johnson; Rob Walker; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Monolayers of molecules are capable of completely changing the nature of surfaces and their interactions with the surroundings despite their almost negligible thickness. In the research presented in this doctoral thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS) was combined with the Langmuir trough to investigate various manifestations of monolayers, such as biomimetic membranes, mono methyl branched long chain fatty acids in contact with air, and hydrophobic silane monolayers in contact with water. 4. 4. Glacial geology of Bayan Har Shan, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

    Author : Jakob Heyman; Arjen P Stroeven; Clas Hättestrand; Helena Alexanderson; Mark D Johnson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The paleoglaciology of the Tibetan Plateau is still largely unexplored, despite its importance for regional and global climate reconstructions. In this thesis a comprehensive glacial geological record is presented from an extensive part of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau centred on the Bayan Har Shan. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biomimetic Membranes: : Molecular Structure and Stability Studies by Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy

    Author : Jonathan F.D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; Magnus C. Johnson; Tore Brinck; Lars Kloo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy VSFS ; Langmuir monolayer; LB depositon; phospholipids; oxidation; biomimetic membranes; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In the research presented in this licentiate thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy, VSFS, combined with the Langmuir trough has been utilized to investigate Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposited mono- and bilayers of phospholipids. Their molecular structure, stability, and hydration were probed to gain additional understanding of important properties aiming at facilitating the use of such layers as model systems for biological membranes.
