  1. 1. Beyond the established risk factors of myocardial infarction : lifestyle factors and novel biomarkers

    Author : Patrik Wennberg; Jan-Håkan Jansson; Mai-Lis Hellénius; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lifestyle factors; physical activity; commuting activity; leisure time physical activity; occupational physical activity; snuff use; haemostatic markers; inflammatory markers; myocardial infarction; epidemiology; primary prevention.; Family medicine; Allmänmedicin; Family Medicine; allmänmedicin;

    Abstract : Age, male sex, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, and obesity are considered as established risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. Several of these established cardiovascular risk factors are strongly influenced by lifestyle. READ MORE

  2. 2. Regulation of Tissue Factor and Coagulation Activity : Translation Studies with Focus on Platelet-Monocyte Aggregates and Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome

    Author : Christina Christersson; Agneta Siegbahn; Lars Wallentin; Jonas Oldgren; Ingebjorg Seljeflot; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Internal medicine; Myocardial infarction; Coagulation; Platelet-monocyte aggregates; Tissue factor; Thrombin inhibition; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Myocardial infarction (MI) is often caused by a disruption of an atherosclerotic plaque with activation of coagulation, platelets and inflammation. The aims were; to investigate whether the oral direct thrombin inhibitor, ximelagatran affected markers for coagulation, platelet and inflammation in a patient cohort with recent MI and if the coagulation markers could identify patients with increased risk of new ischemic events; to evaluate some of the mechanisms involved in formation of platelet-monocyte aggregates (PMAs). 3. 3. Development of a Method to Measure Plasma Levels of Activated Protein C in Complex with Protein C Inhibitor

    Author : Karin Strandberg; Malmö Klinisk kemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; protein C inhibitor; activated protein C; hypercoagulability; deep vein thrombosis; Clinical chemistry; myocardial infarction; Klinisk kemi;

    Abstract : Acute myocardial infarction (MI) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT) are conditions caused by thrombus formation with activation of the coagulation system. The plasma concentration of the complex between activated protein C (APC) and protein C inhibitor (PCI), APC–PCI complex is increased in such states. READ MORE

  4. 4. Inflammation and Coagulation Activity in Unstable Coronary Artery Disease and the Influences of Thrombin Inhibition

    Author : Jonas Oldgren; Steen Husted; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Unstable coronary artery disease; inflammation; coagulation; thrombin inhibition; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; kardiologi; Cardiology;

    Abstract : In patients with unstable coronary artery disease, this study evaluated the degree of inflammation and coagulation activity, relations to myocardial cell damage, prognosis, and influences of randomisation to 72 h infusion with three different doses of inogatran, a direct thrombin inhibitor (n=904), or unfractionated heparin (n=305). Anticoagulant treatment effects were evaluated with aPT time. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fluorinated hydrocarbons used as refrigerants : toxicokinetics and effects in humans

    Author : Sara Gunnare; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) have replaced the chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in refrigeration installations and air-conditioning applications. As substitution progressed, some refrigeration mechanics experienced symptoms of inflammation. READ MORE
