  1. 1. Protection of Biomolecules by Antioxidants - Mechanisms and Applications

    Author : Carl Grey; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; dG; antioxidants; mass spectrometry; Analytical chemistry; Analytisk kemi; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; DNA; Oxidation; Protein; Fenton reaction;

    Abstract : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) consisting of various oxygen-based free radicals as well as other reactive non-radical species produced in O2-related metabolism or through other processes are involved in the oxidation of such vital biomolecules as DNA, proteins and lipids. The types of oxidation represented here are known to cause many different diseases and disorders in human beings, such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease and ageing. READ MORE

  2. 2. Silicon Nanopore Arrays : Fabrication and Applications for DNA Sensing

    Author : Miao Zhang; Jan Linnros; Meni Wanunu; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nanopore; array; electrochemical etching; DNA; optics; thermophoresis;

    Abstract : Nanopore biomolecule sensing and sequencing has emerged as a simple but powerful tool for single molecule studies over the past two decades. By elec- trophoretically driving single molecules through a nanometer-sized pore, often sitting in an insulating membrane that separates two buffer solutions, ionic current blockades can be detected to reveal rich information of the molecules, such as DNA length, protein size and conformation, even nucleic acid se- quence. Abstract : Reactions of trans-dicyanodichloroaurate(III) trans-dibromodicyanoaurate(III), trans-diamminedichlorogold(III), cis-diammine(aqua)chloroplatinum(II), cis-ammineaqua-(cyclohexylamine)chloroplatinum(II), chloro(terpyridine)platinum(II) and chloro-(diethylenetriaminepalldium(II) with dimethyl sulfide, thionucleosides, thionucleotides and thione- and guanine-containing 17-mer oligonucleotides have been investigated by use of conventional and high-pressure stopped-flow spectrophotometry and HPLC technique as a function of ionic strength, pH, temperature and pressure in aqueous solutions. The mechanism and rate of oxidation of dimethyl sulfide by gold(III) complexes depends on the concentration of free halide. READ MORE

  4. 4. Oxidation of fish lipids during gastrointestinal in vitro digestion

    Author : Karin Larsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TBARS; HHE; salmon; lipids; TIM; fish; HNE; in vitro digestion; gastrointestinal; aldehydes; cod liver oil; n-3 PUFA; herring; lipid oxidation; MDA;

    Abstract : Fish and many other marine organisms, contain long chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFA), e.g. eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA has shown beneficial effects in diseases related to inflammatory processes, such as cardiovascular diseases. READ MORE

  5. 5. DNA checkpoint override and redox signaling in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

    Author : Johanna J Sjölander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Caffeine; Cell cycle; Checkpoint; Cdc25; Wee1; TORC1; FHIT; Proliferation; Aph1; Redox; Hypoxia; H2O2; Cysteine; Thiol; Allosteric; MAPK; Sty1; MAPKK; Wis1;

    Abstract : This thesis covers intracellular stress signaling through genotoxic stress, overriding of checkpoint control, as well as cellular redox status in hypoxic and oxidative stress Papers I and II: Caffeine has been shown to override cell cycle checkpoints in humans as well as in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Understanding of the mechanism may aid in the development of compounds with similar overriding mechanisms for sensitization in cancer therapy. READ MORE
