1. Statistical Physics of DNA: Melting and Confinement Effects
Abstract : Investigation of single macromolecules makes it possible to gain insight into and characterize important biological processes. DNA as the molecule of life is of special interest here. READ MORE

2. Fluorescence Probing of DNA Structures in Biology and Nanotechnology
Abstract : Much has been learnt about DNA since its structure was discovered about half a century ago. Scientists everlasting urge to look beyond and deeper into the intricate machinery of life, has continuously pushed technology forward. READ MORE

3. Overstretching short DNA – Single-molecule force spectroscopy studies
Abstract : Structural deformation of DNA has a central role in many biological processes. It occurs, for example, during replication, transcription, and regulation of the activity of the genome. To understand these fundamental processes it is necessary to have a detailed knowledge of the mechanical properties of DNA. READ MORE

4. DNA strand exchange and hydrophobic interactions between biomolecules
Abstract : The role of hydrophobic interactions in DNA strand exchange has been studied using fluorescence-labeled DNA oligomers in a FRET assay. Strand exchange was found to be accelerated in the presence of polyethylene glycol, which provides a crowded and hydrophobic environment possibly mimicking that of the catalytically active recombinase-DNA complexes. 5. Nucleic Acids as Drug Targets -Interactions of Platinum Complexes, Polyamines, and siRNA with DNA and RNA Models
Abstract : Drugs targeting nucleic acids were studied in DNA and RNA model systems. The effects were investigated with respect to structural and thermodynamic influence, kinetics, and biological function. The drugs employed in this thesis were anticancer active platinum(II) complexes, polyamine derivatives, and siRNA. READ MORE
