  1. 1. Mitochondrial DNA in Sensitive Forensic Analysis

    Author : Martina Nilsson; Marie Allen; Ulf Gyllensten; Antti Sajantila; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Genetics; Forensic genetics; Mitochondrial DNA; HVI HVII; Nuclear DNA; Quantification; Real-time PCR; Immobilised SSO probe assay; Pyrosequencing; Discrimination power; Coding region; Mixtures; Genetik;

    Abstract : Genetic profiling is commonly performed on the autosomes using multiple DNA markers. Although routine forensic DNA analysis is robust and based on reliable technologies, samples with degraded or limited amounts of DNA often fail. In these cases, the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can be very valuable due to the high copy number per cell. READ MORE

  2. 2. Competitive-Binding Based Optical DNA Mapping - From Bacterial Plasmids to the Human Genome

    Author : Vilhelm Müller; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; genetics; single-molecule; nanofluidics; DNA; antibiotic resistance; optical DNA mapping; plasmids; competitive binding; fluorescence microscopy; bacteria;

    Abstract : Significant advances within the field of DNA sequencing have allowed us to study DNA at a level of detail that was previously impossible. However, dynamic genomic regions with a high degree of structural variations, while being linked to disease in humans and increased resistance to antibiotics, are still challenging to characterize. 3. 3. Sensitive Identification Tools in Forensic DNA Analysis

    Author : Hanna Edlund; Marie Allen; Niels Morling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : forensic genetics; STRs; Y-chromosome; Pyrosequencing; mitochondrial DNA; skeletal remains; DNA extraction; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicinsk genetik; Medical Genetics;

    Abstract : DNA as forensic evidence is valuable in criminal investigations. Implementation of new, sensitive and fast technologies is an important part of forensic genetic research. This thesis aims to evaluate new sensitive methods to apply in forensic DNA analysis including analysis of old skeletal remains. READ MORE

  4. 4. Markets, mixtures and molecular methods : Investigating medicinal plant and edible orchid diversity in Tanzania and Zambia

    Author : Sarina Veldman; Hugo J. de Boer; Tinde R. van Andel; Barbara Gravendeel; Joseph N. Otieno; Julie Hawkins; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; DNA barcoding; Africa; Species delimitation; Orchids; Medicinal plants;

    Abstract : Medicinal plants are an important source of primary healthcare for many people in Tanzania. These medicinal plants are harvested from the wild, and increasing commercial trade poses a serious threat to local plant populations. Currently it is unknown which species are traded and in what amounts. READ MORE

  5. 5. Impact of epidemiologically identified mixtures of endocrine disrupting chemicals on metabolic programming

    Author : Polina Lizunkova; Joëlle Rüegg; Elin Engdahl; Joachim Sturve; Carl-Gustaf Bornehag; Juliette Legler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Endocrine disrupting chemicals; Mixtures; Metabolism; Developmental Toxicology; Epigenetics; Biologi med inriktning mot ekotoxikologi; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology;

    Abstract : We are ubiquitously exposed to a plethora of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), i.e. substances that alter the function(s) of the endocrine system. While ample evidence show individual EDC's influence on developmental processes resulting in adverse health outcomes, less is known about the effects of human-relevant EDC mixtures exposure. READ MORE
