  1. 21. Ectomycorrhizal community structure and function in relation to forest residue harvesting and wood ash applications

    Author : Shahid Mahmood; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 14C allocation; P uptake; Calcium oxalate; Solubilisation; Tricalcium phosphate; Wood ash; Forest residue; N deposition; rDNA; ITS region; PCR-RFLP; Spruce; Ectomycorrhiza; Community structure; Wood ash colonisation; Spruce colonisation; Competition; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : Ectomycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic associations with tree roots and assist in nutrient-uptake and -cycling in forest ecosystems, thereby constituting a most significant part of the microbial community. The aims of the studies described in this thesis were to evaluate the potential of DNA-based molecular methods in below-ground ectomycorrhizal community studies and to investigate changes in ectomycorrhizal communities on spruce roots in sites with different N deposition, and in sites subjected to harvesting of forest residues or application of wood ash. Abstract : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. READ MORE

  3. 23. On the mechanisms and consequences of cell to cell DNA transfer

    Author : Jacob Ehnfors; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Development of cancer is a multistep process where an accumulation of genetic alterations drives normal cells to malignancy. In most cancer cells genetic changes can be observed both at the level of point mutations and as gains and losses of chromosomes. READ MORE

  4. 24. Cell-penetrating peptides; chemical modification, mechanism of uptake and formulation development

    Author : Kariem Ezzat; Ülo Langel; Steven Dowdy; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell penetrating peptides; gene therapy; scavenger receptors; pharmaceutical formulation; solid dispersion; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : Gene therapy holds the promise of revolutionizing the way we treat diseases. By using recombinant DNA and oligonucleotides (ONs), gene functions can be restored, altered or silenced according to the therapeutic need. READ MORE

  5. 25. Nitrogen uptake and assimilation during Norway spruce somatic embryogenesis : investigating the role of glutamine

    Author : Johanna Carlsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Sweden is currently experiencing shortage of Norway spruce (Picea abies) seeds due to e.g. irregular flowering and the recent year’s outbreaks of pests and pathogens destroying cones and seeds. READ MORE
