  1. 1. Maturation of Clay Seals in Deep Bore Holes for Disposal of Radioactive waste : Theory and Experiments

    Author : Ting Yang; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; high-level radioactive waste; HLW; very deep borehole; VDH; disposal; saturation degree; water transport; maturation; model; shear strength; hydraulic conductivity; swelling pressure; homogenization; Geoteknik; Soil Mechanics;

    Abstract : KBS-3 and very deep borehole (VDH) concepts are two major types of long-term geologicaldisposal methods for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) isolating from the biosphere. TheKBS-3V concept for isolating the HLW at the depth of 400-500 m, is the officially proposedoption in Sweden and has been the subject of considerable research in the past few decades,while the VDH concept was considered as an option in the 1950s but later became discouragedbecause of insufficient experience in drilling technology. 2. 2. Wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands : Effects of vegetation, hydraulics and data analysis methods

    Author : Hristina Bodin; Karin Tonderski; Jesper Persson; Stefan Weisner; Per Milberg; Hans Brix; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : constructed wetland; free water surface flow; wastewater treatment; Kenya; Sweden; vegetation; harvest; Cyperus papyrus; Echinochloa pyramidalis; mass load; phosphorus; ammonium; suspended solids; pollutant removal; hydraulics; residence time distribution; data analysis methods; Konstgjorda våtmarker; avloppsvatten; vattenrening; fosfor; ammonium; partiklar; Kenya; Sverige; växter; Cyperus papyrus; Echinochloa pyramidalis; skörd; hydraulik; dataanalysmetod;

    Abstract : Degradation of water resources has become one of the most pressing global concerns currently facing mankind. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) represent a concept to combat deterioration of water resources by acting as buffers between wastewater and receiving water bodies. READ MORE

  3. 3. Effectiveness of reclamation by backfilling and sealing at Kimheden open-pit mine, northern Sweden

    Author : Lucile Villain; Erik Carlsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Reclamation of mine sites is a very recent concept on the scale of mining history. It involves the prevention or mitigation of the environmental impacts from mining, and the establishment of sustainable post-mining uses of the land. READ MORE

  4. 4. Hemicelluloses and other Polysaccharides for Wood Adhesive Applications

    Author : Emelie Norström; Eva Malmström; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The growing environmental awareness has led to an increased interest in bio-based polymers as replacement for fossil-based materials. The purpose of the work described in this thesis was to investigate the possibility of using hemicelluloses and other polysaccharides as replacement for fossil-based polymers in wood adhesives. 5. 5. The bentonite barrier : microstructural aspects on colloid filtration and radiation effects on bentonite colloid stability

    Author : Michael Holmboe; Mats Jonsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Chemistry;

    Abstract : In many countries a multi-barrier concept in a deep geological repository is planned for final disposal of nuclear waste. Many of these different concepts, for example the Swedish KBS-3 model, include an engineered barrier consisting of compacted bentonite. READ MORE
