  1. 1. Momentum exchange between light and nanostructured matter

    Author : Daniel Andrén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; phase-gradient metasurface; optical force and torque; metavehicle; momentum exchange.; nano-optics; rotary nanomotor; optical tweezers;

    Abstract : An object's translational and rotational motion is associated with linear and angular momenta. When multiple objects interact the exchange of momentum dictates the new system's motion. READ MORE

  2. 2. On the Ising problem and some matrix operations

    Author : Daniel Andrén; Roland Häggkvist; Henrik Eriksson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ising problem; phase tansition; matrix multiplicatoin; matrix inversion; Discrete mathematics; Diskret matematik;

    Abstract : The first part of the dissertation concerns the Ising problem proposed to Ernst Ising by his supervisor Wilhelm Lenz in the early 20s. The Ising model, or perhaps more correctly the Lenz-Ising model, tries to capture the behaviour of phase transitions, i.e. how local rules of engagement can produce large scale behaviour. READ MORE

  3. 3. Optical manipulation and heating of gold nanoparticles near interfaces

    Author : Daniel Andrén; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LSPR spectroscopy; particle-surface separation distance; thermal reshaping; TIRM; nanomotor; plasmonics; photothermal effects; Brownian dynamics; gold nanorod; optical tweezers;

    Abstract : By focusing laser light to small volumes, its momentum can be used to trap and manipulate objects in the size range from cells down to single atoms. Devices using this effect are called optical tweezers, and have found use in measuring and applying minuscule forces and torques, contributed to deepening our knowledge of molecular motors, unraveling the mechanics of cells and DNA, and better understand statistical mechanics and hydrodynamic interactions at the nanoscale. 4. 4. Fixed points, fractals, iterated function systems and generalized support vector machines

    Author : Xiaomin Qi; Sergei Silvestrov; Anatoliy Malyarenko; Daniel Andren; Viktor Abramov; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; support vector machine; fixed points; iterated function system; variational inequality; Mathematics Applied Mathematics; matematik tillämpad matematik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, fixed point theory is used to construct a fractal type sets and to solve data classification problem. Fixed point method, which is a beautiful mixture of analysis, topology, and geometry has been revealed as a very powerful and important tool in the study of nonlinear phenomena. READ MORE
