  1. 11. Computational modelling of blood flow in medical assist devices

    Author : Francesco Fiusco; Lisa Prahl Wittberg; Lars Mikael Broman; Anders Dahlkild; David Ku; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; computational fluid dynamics; haemodynamics; platelet activation; thrombogenicity; haemolysis; extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; sensitivity; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving support treat-ment in case of pulmonary and/or cardiac failure. An artificial extracorporealcircuit is used to offload the function of lungs and/or heart. READ MORE

  2. 12. Nanoscopic adventures : unraveling macromolecular complexes in infectious diseases via integrative structural biology

    Author : Kai Patric Ehrenbolger; Ronnie Berntsson; Felipe Cava; Jonas Barandun; David Drew; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Infectious diseases; E. faecalis; Microsporidia; Ribosome; Proteasome; Polar Tube; Structural Biology; Single particle Cryo-Electron Microscopy;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases, which claim nearly 9 million lives annually. The research centers on critical analysis of pathogen mechanisms and drug resistance. I have mainly focused on two clades of pathogens: Enterococcus faecalis and microsporidia. E. READ MORE

  3. 13. Stability of bacterial DNA in relation to microbial detection in teeth

    Author : Malin Brundin; Ulf Sjögren; Anders Johansson; David Figdor; Inge Fristad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell-bound DNA; cell-death; dentine; DNA binding affinity; DNA decomposition; DNA preservation; extracellular DNA; hydroxyapatite; PCR; polymerase chain reaction; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : The fate of DNA from dead cells is an important issue when interpreting results from root canal infections analysed by the PCR technique. DNA from dead bacterial cells is known to be detectable long time after cell death and its stability is dependent on many different factors. READ MORE

  4. 14. Long Story of Short Forms : The Evolution of Simplified Chinese Characters

    Author : Roar Bökset; Torbjörn Lodén; David Branner; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Chinese language; Kinesiska;

    Abstract : A script reform was carried out in China between 1955 and 1964 by simplifying the shape of a number of characters. Most of the simplified forms adopted had already been in popular use for a long time before this reform, while a few were invented for the occasion.One objective of this dissertation is to estimate the proportion of invented forms. 5. 15. Structural and biochemical insights into biosynthesis and degradation of N-glycans

    Author : Tom Reichenbach; Christina Divne; David Drew; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; N-glycan; biosynthesis; degradation; glycosyltransferase; glycoside hydrolase; biofuel; enzyme; membrane protein; Bioteknologi; Biotechnology;

    Abstract : Carbohydrates are a primary energy source for all living organisms, but importantly, they also participate in a number of life-sustaining biological processes, e.g. cell signaling and cell-wall synthesis. The first part of the thesis examines glycosyltransferases that play a crucial role in the biosynthesis of N-glycans. READ MORE
