1. Study of a Large Deformable Mirror Concept
Abstract : It is attractive to integrate a large deformable mirror for adaptive optics into an astronomical telescope rather than using relay optics within an auxiliary instrument. However, the resulting large deformable mirror can be expensive, particularly for extremely large telescopes. READ MORE

2. Novel beam shaping and computer vision methods for laser beam welding
Abstract : Laser beam welding has been widely applied in different industrial sectors due to its unique advantages. However, there are still challenges, such as beam positioning in T-joint welding, and gap bridging in butt joint welding, especially in the case of varying gap width along a joint. READ MORE

3. Extremely Large Telescopes Optical Design and Wavefront Correction
Abstract : An overview of the state of art within optical design of large astronomical telescopes is given. Recent advances within the field are presented. The importance of new computer-controlled mirror-polishing methods is emphasized. READ MORE

4. Gradient Methods for Large-Scale and Distributed Linear Quadratic Control
Abstract : This thesis considers methods for synthesis of linear quadratic controllers for large-scale, interconnected systems. Conventional methods that solve the linear quadratic control problem are only applicable to systems with moderate size, due to the rapid increase in both computational time and memory requirements as the system size increases. 5. Peripheral Vision : Adaptive Optics and Psychophysics
Abstract : This thesis is about our peripheral vision. Peripheral vision is poor compared to central vision, due to both neural and optical factors. The optical factors include astigmatism, defocus and higher order aberrations consisting mainly of coma. Neurally, the density of ganglion cells decreases towards the periphery, which limits the sampling density. READ MORE
